"Ads that appear in immersive VR environments can not only provide more effective impressions, they can also track whether the users have viewed them or have turned away their gaze. Accordingly, the multiplied effect of effective impressions and verified viewings will bring you higher advertising revenue!" HTC explains.

 

Advertisers will only pay for ads after they've been viewed, according to Business Insider. Some of the formats they will use include loading scenes, 2D and 3D in-app placements, app recommendation banners, and big screen video.

 

"Compared to ordinary ad impressions, ads that are seen by users in an immersive VR environment can not only meet the user’s needs by means of precise re-targeting, but can also be detected if they are viewed effectively by users," HTC states. "Therefore, promotion of your applications would have a much more effective impression, which not only arouses the attention of potential users and enhance the brand image but further attracts interested users directly to download your apps in the VR environment!"

 

Soooo, It seems like in-game billboards will have actual ads that work now? That's an interesting way of monetizing that space

 

But as mentioned in the article, these ads will only be implemented into games hosted on VivePort. Please note that Devs would have to Opt-in and implement SDKs to show ads in their games.

 

As long as this is executed well, I reckon this would be kinda cool; Buuuuut, so far it doesn't seem like there's a big chance of that happening. 

 

Is Valve just showing their greed or am I not thinking deep enough into this? A new age of advertising is upon us folks. Seems like Valve/HTC is wanting to become the Google of the VR market?

that said, a €1000 piece of hardware SHOULD NOT HAVE ADS IN ANY CASE OTHER THAN IT BEING GIVEN OUT FREE.

I agree. If you're gonna pay that much for hardware, there shouldn't be ads.

If I pay 1000€ for hardware, I don't want it to be used for advertising me stuff, period.

Either way, as it was mentioned, I think that this would need in-game ad implementation, unless they can somehow shove in externally which would most likely break immersion in some way.

i'd be down for, for example, HTC sponsoring hardware shops to create free in-shop VR experiences for the masses, which contain ads here and there *within* the experience.

 

but as i said.. free.. not $1000 for the face-brick alone.

 

i should also note, i just thought of that word, and from now on until they figure out how to make it lighter than a phone in a google cardboard, i'll call them face-bricks.

Side note, i think it would be cool if (bear with me) you're in a VR world and you pass by a TV and on that TV is the ad for, whatever. At least it would feel like part of the world, unless you were playing a non satirical mass world destruction game and you see a happy go lucky commercial for E.D.

This thread is a good indicator of who is underage. I don't like ads either, but they've been in games for a long time already so it's not suddenly a new concept out of the blue.

 

Games also cost this thing called "money" to develope which requires a team to get this thing called "payroll" for their efforts. How does a company get money? Backers, sponsors and ADVERTISERS, omg what a shock.

How "underage" do you need to be, to consider advertising the only source of revenue. I remember back in my day, people just used to pay money directly for a product / service.

 

On a different note, HTC seem desperate, they tried something similar on their phones. Integrating adverts straight into HTC sense home, which I'm assuming was an utter failure at generating revenue, and a huge PR blunder. It certainly played a part in my decision to opt for a Oneplus 3 over the HTC 10.

There is a difference between product placements in games (which can at times go too far, eg The Division and Nissan) and advertisements displayed by the hardware which you paid a large chunk of money for.

but your monitor hasnt ever baked ads into your gaming experience has it? or your mouse or keyboard?

 

because that's what this is, it's a peripheral changing the experience you're controlling and/or viewing trough it.

I think we seem to have forgotten how this isn't new at all. NFS was notorious for having 2 brands for every billboard on the map. Progressive ads fill the sky in NFS Undercover, Prostreet has sponsors EVERYWHERE.

Huh,I could've sworn that games had some sort of number on them that indicated a monetary amount to be paid to the developers in order to cover those expenses. But maybe I've just been delirious all these years.
