unless you get a motherboard that uses ddr3 itll only work with ddr4.

Main PC |CPU - i7-6700k|GPU - R9 290x tri-x 4gb|RAM - 16gb ddr4|MOBO - MSI z170 - A PRO|HDD - WD 1TB/240gb Sandisk |PSU - 700w Raidmax

Laptop |CPU - i7 4720hq|GPU - 960m 2gb|Ram - 8gb 2x4|Model - y50-70 Touch|SSD - 240gb Patriot drive|Display - 1920x1080 IPS touch

You need motherboard that supports the DDR3L module, because it physically won't fit into the DDR4 slot.

Also DDR3L are the low voltage modules at 1.35V, not just any DDR3.

Don't use DDR3 on skylake, MOBO's that support it are really rare and sometimes have a premium

Want to custom loop?  Ask me more if you are curious

Listen man. I've seen a few of your posts. Your platform is outdated, you have to get a new one (without using parts from the current one). This RAM is obsolete. Stop speculating and save for a proper PC. Do yourself a favour.

But what would happen if I used ddr3 1066 ram.

I assume it would work, provided it is a Skylake DDR3/DDR3L motherboard. You cannot install DDR3 modules into a DDR4 slot. Those clock speeds are just the "base frequency" and are usually not a hard limitation.

It's hard to say for sure because, well, this isn't a thing someone would typically do. ;) I kinda agree with the above post, just save for a proper DDR4 system.

If you force a skylake chip to use normal DDR3 it will work, yes... and it'll also kill the processor much much sooner... stop trying to save on bad memory while wanting to buy a very bad price to performance processor.

DDR3L is lower voltage tan regular DDR3. Skylake and Kaby lake use lower voltage than previous DDR3 systems. using regular DDR3 would cook the memory controllers on the new CPUs from drawing too much current. If you're gonna build a system do it right, dont try to use old RAM.

You are better off with:

  1. Save some money by getting a i5-6600 (non-K) or i5-6500
  2. Get a inexpensive B150 / H110 / H170 / Q170 / B250 / H270 / Q270 motherboard that supports DDR4 memory
  3. Use the money saved to get DDR4 memory
