What is in my Bag.

You should give it a Viking funeral.  Always sad when camera gear dies.

I added a DJI Mavic to my kit less than a month ago, in preparation for an assignment in June to film in different countries.  Taking a FS7, D800 and the Mavic to Ecuador, Philippines and Bhutan and perhaps Liberia.

Nice, yeah it was annoying when it flopped off the camera, leaving the mount behind.

I was like "Well shit, that happened" Then went to Amazon for a new one

  • 1 month later...

So I was at a trip in Bucharest for vacation and thought I'd share what I had with me as I said in the rate my photo thread.  Excuse the poor quality my camera was in the frame so I had to use my phone which is pretty beat up. DSC_0065.thumb.JPG.4b463893f605aba3f1dfb2005e1b6b3c.JPG

So we have:

1. 3LT Albert

2. Lowepro Filter case with Formatt Hitech 0.9 ND soft grad and ND filters, and the foundation 100mm kit.

3. MX master

4. No-name L-Bracket for the 5d3

5. Peakdesign Slide strap

6. Dell XPS 13

7. Battery Charger and extra battery

8. Transcend 1TB external HDD

9. Viltrox intervalometer and remote trigger

10. Macro extension tubes

11. EOS 5d mk3

12. Sigma 35mm f/1.4 Art lens (Was on the camera 80% of the time, amazing lens, can't praise it enough)

13. Canon EF 24-105mm f/4L IS (Never left the bag except to take the photo, I should have left it at home!)

14. Canon EF 17-40mm f/4.0L  (Used for landscape shots and some indoor stuff or building images).

15. Pack of wires and various bits and bobs like a travel extension and card reader:

16. Memory Card Case (8gb CF card, 32gb Sandisk SD Card and 2 cheap adapted micro sd cards, also have a 32gb Kingston CF card and Lexar 64gb sd card in Camera.

17. Lens wipes and microfibre cloth.

18. Anker 20,000mah battery bank, next to the intervalometer.

Most of these were carried in my Thinktank retrospective 7, with the Skin 50 V2.0 attached on the side:DSC_0066.thumb.JPG.7c9259a52f8288094b2a5987a12d1b69.JPG

In the bag there is also a flashlight I carry with me for rain shots, seeing in the dark, and I also used it to play around with lightpainting with a friends camera that was with me on the trip.

It got quite heavy, but it is useful for changing lenses faster and is allowed as an additional carry on on BA flights.

The tripod was usually in my suitcase, and I just attached the strap to it when I carried it, but I mostly left it locked in the hostel and planned on when to use it  rather than always carry it with me.

I also had a bit of an issue at the airport in Romania where I had to remove everything from the bag which was a pain...

The images I managed to edit while there are in my flickr if anyone want to take a look. I have more which are either unedited yet (mostly landscapes where I'd rather be home) or of friends which I will refrain from posting anywhere but in facebook.

@cc143

OK so here are the stuff that I took/taking with me on my travels this month.  10 days in Ecuador and 4 days each in Bhutan and Philippines.

Since the objective of this trip is filming, obviously the FS7 was packed.  I'm carrying the Sony 18-105 f/4 OSS lens for the sake of convenience and left my cine lenses at home.

  • FS7, handle + controller, spare batteries
  • Sennheiser shotgun mic with RODE deadcat
  • Sennheiser G3 wireless lav (only 1 set)
  • Sony MDR 7506 headphone

I plan to take photos if I have time, hence the D800 and 24-70 f/2.8 lens and a flash unit, along with spare batteries of course.

Everything I've shown here fits into 2 bags that I take as carry on, on the plane.  The FS7 fits into the ThinkTankPhoto Airport Navigator rolling case, the D800 and flash into the Mindshift Gear Rotation 180 Pro's waist bag.  I left the Rotation 180 backpack at home.

Then I thought, maybe I may want to do some drone video/photos if possible at the various locations (note: flying drones in Bhutan is not allowed, more on this and other stuff later).

DJI Mavic, remote controller to use with my iPhone (being used to take these photos), spare batteries, PolarPro filter kit and Mavic feet extensions.

Initially I wasn't planning to take my A6500, however a situation popped up and decided to take it anyway.  It has served as a backup camera for both video and photography, as well has being useful as a B-cam, small less intimidating camera for filming interviews instead of a big FS7, etc.

A6500, spare battery, USB power bank, RODE SmartLav mic.

IMG_1866.jpg.fc41fb1851840dcbba9d3e7b9d511b83.jpg

For the DJI Mavic, I bought the package that included 2 spare batteries, car charger, battery charger hub, spare propellers, and the carry bag.  For the A6500 I am using the Mirrorless Mover from ThinkTankPhoto.

Now for some accessories.

Canon image stabilized binoculars, a small on-camera LED light, a handheld mic and XLR cable, power adapters, various USB cables, and external HDDs along with my 15" rMBP.  The Red hard drive contains stock files and templates I might need access to, the black drives are for backing up whatever I film or photograph.  Not shown in any of these photos, memory cards for all the cameras, memory card readers, and other miscellaneous accessories.  Finally my tripod, again not shown in the photo.

IMG_1871.jpg.da0847e9fc0972941673187cebd12dc6.jpg

There's another reason I decided to bring the A6500.  In Bhutan, it's hard to get permission for filming so the people arranging my visit said I can use the FS7 inside the conference areas to film the interviews but not outdoors where the locals might feel invasion or privacy or intimidated by a large camera.  They however said I won't need a permit if I use a small camera, hence the A6500.  They gave me the visa and permit to work for free, but the permit to film with the FS7 was another issue.

The DJI Mavic and A6500 bags, unfortunately they don't fit into my carry on bags so I have them inside my checked suitcase.  My suitcase is a hardshell with each half being able to be isolated into it's own compartment.  So one side I pack the tripod, Mavic, raincover for the FS7, cables, battery chargers, other camera accessories and tools, etc.  The other half I pack my clothes and the A6500 bag.
