Id probably get a r510 then put a few more 4gb ddr3 ecc sticks in.

You think they will be compatible?

the ram or the raid card? should be yes for both.

OK, the RAID card is around 70€ for me... quite a lot.

I thought mismatching ECC RAM was a bad idea...

it normally works fine, you probably already have 2x4gb in there anyways.

OK then...

So let's talk about the RAID card. It's expensive, even used. I don't think buying from China would be a good idea. Any alternatives? Or am I stuck with a 70€ price tag?

Dam. Which is worse? xD

Alright, I think 70€ it is, but it's not like I am buying that thing tomorrow, it's gonna be a long project.

Can you think of anything else that could help me? Even the stupidest things that come to your mind, JUST DO IT!

Extra network cards? There are already more than enough LAN ports for me.

External storage? That might be a good option.

More RAID cards... Could I buy a cheaper RAID card and put it there instead of the H700?

if you get the raid card, you need different cables, normally there are kits on ebay with all the cables.

For esxi id probably install the os on a usb stick. There should be s usb port inside the server

If you don't use esxi and use linux, you can use software raid and get a cheaper dell h200 for drives.

I don't know if it comes with drives caddies, you will need to buy them if it doesn't and you want to add more drives

Its mainly for things like fiber channel or 10gbe

Those external storage cards are for connecting things like the sa120. The raid card is standard pcie and just has a slot internall with no back bracket, you should be able to put any card in, its just that the h700 is about as cheap as it gets for a good raid card.

Alright then, I don't think I will be using Fiber channel or anything fancy.

So the H200 is not easily available for me, only from e-bay for a not that attractive price either.

Oh, when I will want to buy that RAID card, what should I ask? I mean, what should be in the package? The card, the battery, cables?

here is one that comes with cables http://www.ebay.com/itm/Dell-Poweredge-PERC-H700-PCI-E-x8-SAS-RAID-Controller-W-Cables-R374M-/142308175836?hash=item21223a6fdc:g:Zb4AAOSwOgdYwuW6

All you need is the card, the sas cable, and the battery

Hmm... SAS drives are not common here, at least not in large capacities. If I wanted to use SATA drives, what would I have to do?

sata drives will work just fine with these controllers.

Sata drives work in sas enclosure, but not the other way around.

Oh, OK then!

The 2TB cap still applies to the SATA drives with the Perc6/i controller right?

yep. If you put a bigger than 2tb drive in there, it will show up as a 2tb drive.

it works fine, you can only use the first 2tb of the drive.

Alright, good to know.

How much storage capacity do I lose when I put drives in a RAID 5 array?

Let's say I would get 6 2TB drives and connect them in RAID for example.

Raid 5 of 6x 2TB will be 10tb usable
