CPU Dilemma

Hi all,

At the minute I'm at an impass with myself. I have a 6700K which was fine and done everything I wanted but the need for more got the better of me. I got a 6800K but after 2 failed boards, I feel put off with the X99 chipset. My choices are;

  1. Keep the 6800K and try another board
  2. Go for Ryzen instead
  3. Sell the chip and stick with the 6700K
  4. Wait for the X299 chipset later this year

I mostly game at 1440p on a GTX 1080 but I hate knowing there's something more I could have at my disposal. Any feedback would be great, or if someone wants to have a go at fixing my X99 board you're more than welcome haha

the 6700k is better for gaming than the 6800k. unless you have a need for more than 4 cores I would just sell the 6800k and stick with the 6700k

Why did you buy a 6800k if you had a 6700k...

Honestly, a X99 board came up cheap (which I now regret) and got a really good deal on the chip. That board has came and gone; now another board is acting up

i mean a 6800k is really useless if you had a 6700k...  if you really wanted something that is like the 6800k, then sell the 6800k, and the 6700k and buy a ryzen 7 1800x (although i would just sell the 6800k and stick with the 6700k will do fine)

edit*

useless in terms of gaming

But are you doing gaming or more than just gaming?

Because if you're just gaming then the 6800k is a downgrade...

That was an extremely expensive upgrade for not much of a higher performance, if you upgraded to the 1800x I could understand but the 6800k? All those issues you had I would honestly go back to the 6700k and sell the 6800k like others said

Not just gaming, I'd run various VMs and media servers but nothing like video rendering or anything like that. If Ryzen's gaming reviews were better, I'd be all on that

Ryzen's gaming is about the same as the 6000 series x99 chips, worse than both the 6700k and 7700k.

Well, may not strictly be true if the memory issue is sorted

Ok, I'll probably sell the chip anyway since I'm 2 boards down as it is. So is the 7700k considered the CPU king of gaming at present?

You do realize that an i7 can also get faster memory and be overclocked, right?

For pure gaming yes.

you didn't watch the video did you, if you did you would know that the 7700k was ran at 5 ghz and 3200mhz ram, using faster ram on Ryzen isn't about the bandwidth per see, its about reducing the latency between the cores
