GTX 960M worth it?

I'm planning on buying a computer and i've seen some pretty decent. but they have a 960m. My question is, is that graphics card powerful enougth to run games at 60fps, like for example The WItcher 3?

No.

Not at anything above 1080p anyways.

the 960M is the perfect solution for something like Overwatch or Skyrim at 1080p, but The Witcher III will want something more beefy.

Well, with an i7, GTX 1080, Full tower and flashy lights, it can obviously only be for one thing:

Solitaire.

960m owner here.

Skyrim is great

CSGO is great

Indies are great

Overwatch is great

Dota is great

most games run fine.

But the Witcher 3 is more demanding than any of those games. You will need 970m or 1050ti to run TW3 at decent settings 1080p. And the witcher 3 is one of those games where resolution makes an enormous difference, so keep that in mind. I can't play TW3 at 720p60 on my 960m before quitting because it's so ugly at that low resolution. It's better at 1080p, but not great. At 1440p is where the witcher looks great, but it takes a beefy PC to push that.

I'd stick to less demanding games, source games, and esports games with a 960m. It is by no means a weak processor, but it doesn't have the same horsepower that you need to play AAA titles at 1080p or higher.

Which 960M laptops are you looking at? If you're referring to the MSI GL62 or ASUS K501UW, know that they use low quality TN panels with poor contrast and viewing angles. For that reason I usually don't recommend them.

The 960M laptops I usually recommend are:

- ASUS ZX53VW (72% NTSC gamut IPS rather than 45%, 512GB SSD)

- Dell Inspiron 7559 (45% NTSC IPS)

- Dell XPS 9550 (72% NTSC IPS for FHD models, high contrast but lower response time, you can often get good deals refurbished, build quality is great assuming yours didn't have QC issues)

- ASUS G551JW refurbished on Newegg for $599 (72% NTSC IPS) -- current deal

On mobile so I didnt add links, but they should be fairly easy to find.

Also is it even worth buying laptops with 960m at this point? Or should you pickup say a dell xps 15 with a 1050?

How hot does it get? Is it cooler than the 10 series cards? such as the 1050,1050ti,1060?

The GL62 also uses a low quality TN panel, forgot to mention that.

The GE62 uses a good quality IPS panel, at least all the versions I've seen. Looks like there are both 960M and 970M models. The 970M competes with a 1050 Ti, and I've seen the 970M one go on sale at Amazon, but it might be sold out now.

Why should anyone go for a 1050ti then if a 970m competes with it and sometimes even at a good deal?

Really depends on your laptop. Mine is a Lenovo Y50-70 which overheats pretty badly under load. Like, throttles mid-game in Overwatch unless I have it on minimum settings (It plays higher settings fine until it overheats and throttles)

But my friend's ASUS ROG laptop has great cooling and has never overheated. Runs under 75c at all times.

It depends. I don't really see that many 970M laptops that are worthwhile deals.

The GE62 isn't always available at that price, and the Best Buy GL502VT at this price uses another very low quality TN panel.

Because the 1050 Ti is cooler, draws less power under full load and costs less to produce, meaning cheaper laptops on average. The power savings alone mean you get a decent laptop when not gaming and on the battery instead of wishing Optimus did a better job helping out your battery life. :P The 970M isn't a bad GPU, but when the #2 card from the previous generation doesn't even come CLOSE to the #3 card (1060) of the current generation, then why bother? Seriously. 9_9

i like how no one asked what this guy's budget is.

@uriv1999 whether it's worth it depends on the price. A 980m laptop is worth it if it's like 800 dollars. But not worth it at 1.2k. So. what are u looking at and what prices is it at.
