NBN: AVC, CVC charges 'put gigabit plans out of reach'

New Zealand can offer its residents 1Gbps broadband plans for NZ$130 (A$120) a month because the access virtual circuit (AVC) charges are low, the ISP MyRepublic says.

Quote

The difference in a 1Gbps connection was even more, the spokesperson pointed out. In New Zealand, there was an AVC charge of between NZ$60 to NZ$65 which included the CVC charge. In Australia, the AVC was A$150, while the CVC was A$15.25 per Mbps, with 2.5 to 3Mbps required.

Yes, The NBN needs to make money. But I personally think that's too much :/

Quote

The current AVC and CVC pricing would make 1Gbps prohibitively priced, the spokesperson said.

All back when the NBN CEO (Bill Morrow, An AMERICAN.) Said australian's don't need 1GBPS, That we wouldn't take it even if it was for free.

WRONG.

Many business's need 1GBPS and some household's need it too. Yes It seems a bit over the top. but New zealand has it. Why shouldn't we?

Move to NZ. The salaries are lower, so you still won't be able to afford the $130/month :P.

Maybe because their population is a quarter of Australia's and according to this site Australia ranks 32 for the most internet usage opposed to New Zealand who ranks 81.  Which means New Zealand know not much of their people use internet which means its cheaper for them to achieve higher speeds. Australia on the other hand use internet quite a bit with more population as well.

Honestly I don't know and these are just assumptions but I do wish Australia can have 1Gbps

Well that explains it. Our taxes aren't enough to fund Australia for better internet. Besides 3Mbps is quite plenty for my needs and maybe for most people as well but that 1Gbps would be incredible though.

So, if 1gbps is too expensive for everyone, then how much does that cost?

erm.. I have no idea, it comes standard on my server. I get billed per 10GB block, which iirc is $10c/10gb block upload or dl

but that's in bulk and all of the nodes are wired to the same avc so technically it's cheaper but they're buying a fucktonne of bandwidth

idk

1000/10*(10/100) = $10 per TB (A little more if the provider deals in tibibytes).

A wise man (Bill Gates) once said,

Quote

No one will need more than 637 kB of memory for a personal computer

He was wrong.

A Dumb person (NBN CEO Bill Morrow) now says,

Quote

Australian's don't need 1GBPS, That we wouldn't take it even if it was for free.

He is still wrong.

Hmm, I think I see a pattern.
