Air Cooling FX-9590

So...total hypothetical *wink* assuming one has an FX-9590 and a Noctua NH-D15S with 3 fans, would one be safe in attempting to cool such a cpu with such a cooler? Just curious...totally not going to try it regardless of what is said....teeheehee #soirresponsible #totallynothypothetical #lalalaIcan'theartyou #gonnatryitanyway.

The Noctua NH-D15 is rated for 220w for the AM3 platform... which the FX9590 is a 220w chip... I hope you have a fire extinguisher near by...

It's fine. An Fx8350 at 5GHZ can be cooled by one and the 9590 is only 4.7ghz

I run my 8350 at 5.2GHz with a Dark Rock Pro 3 no issue

The FX-9590 is a f*cking toaster, regardless of how you cool it (unless you're using liquid nitrogen or some insane crap like that).  Having said that, air cooling it with a Noctua will keep it from burning your house down, so I would say that you're fine.

Yes, especially if not stress-testing it, but just using it. It wouldn't hurt to check how far you can undervolt it at clock speeds, though (but some motherboards disable turbo as soon as you touch anything, so you may lose the 5GHz boost in that case). Just don't ignore your motherboard's advise regarding cooling the socket / VRM area when not using a topblow cooler.

Noctua rates its coolers based on CPUs' TDPs. Hence, it states 220W because that's the highest TDP (that's different from what BeQuiet does, for example, rating its DP3 fro 250W).

It isn't different from cooling an OCed cpu in general.
