Biostar AM4 ITX board in detail

dizmo

More pictures of the upcoming Ryzen ITX board from BioStar have surfaced.

Spoiler

25053305576l.jpg

25053305372l.jpg

The board makes use of the higher end X370 chipset. Odd choice, but definitely not something to complain about.

The board also features:

  • 5 USB 3.0 ports
  • 1 USB C port
  • PS/2 port
  • 1 m.2 PCIe 4x
  • 4 onboard SATA connectors
  • 4 PIN RGB support
  • Nice audio stack

Personally I'm not a fan. Not enough USB ports for me, the m.2 connector is on the back, and Biostar isn't exactly known for excellent boards. I do wonder if the mounting system AMD has is going to severely limit what manufacturers can fit onto AM4 ITX boards.

Hopefully some of the more established manfuacturers give us some really full fledged ITX boards.
The wait is on.

I'm going to hop ship and join the SFF enthusiasts eventually and an AM4 is looking to be what I might go with, but I agree with what Linus said about the awkward plastic-looking mounting thing that it takes up too much room on smaller boards.

Why anyone would need more than 4 SATA ports in a SFF build is beyond me :P

USB ports, yes the board is lacking, one of my gripes. Not all do though, and not everyone needs more than 5 ;)

Yay for close mindedness?

@dizmo

irnoically, the AM3+ Biostar boards have been reported to be quite reliable, but AM3 and previous was apparently a small disaster.

I like the addition of RGB heads, but i'd rather have fan headers...

People wanting an itx am4 build are probably better off waiting for x300 chipset boards tbh

x370 wasn't specifically designed with SFF in mind . x300 was .

As a less complex , thus smaller chipset , x300 should allow board designers more freedom when planning the layout.

Plus , if i remember correctly , ryzen chipsets are using 65 nm lithograpy , compared to z270 on 14nm . the chips are larger and use more power .

Yeah but I don't think it'll really change anything board wise. It's not like you're gaining something that X370 doesn't have.

You're just not maximizing what X370 can offer. I imagine it'll affect price more than anything.

updated my post btw . My main point is that an itx form factor won't be able to offer all x370 features , so cutting them down in a smaller chipset without effectively sacrificing anything would allow for more SFF-oriented features to be implemented

Apparently, not much, seeing how they had spare room for two LED cotnrollers :P

Ahhh yes, that makes more sense.

What SFF features are there? I can't think of anything that's specifically SFF.

This is interesting right off the bat I believe nobody but Asrock makes X99 itx boards and yes if you think this socket takes a lot of space on such a small board, even with the server array for the socket (which afaik also limits cooling compatibility) X99 looks well, positively ridiculous:

Image result for asrock x99 itx

(Notice also the CPU pin is 8 pin vs 4 pin: No accident since Ryzen TDP is far less than X99, this is a plus for ITX)

So if you want a mobile workstation of sorts boards like this for AM4 make an already compelling use case almost essential for really portable workstations.

This board just seem strange to me... No wifi, but 2 RGB headers?  so few usb ports... at least it has an M.2 unlike Gigabyte's upcoming offering...  I guess I'll just keep holding out for Asrock?

hope its not verry expensive seeing as im going to be buying an AM4 ITX board for the Toaster Project and i dont want this thing to cost me $250 which would make it the BY FAR most expensive part of it :|

I spent $2500 on building my PC and all i do with it is play no games atm & watch anime at 1080p(finally) watch YT and write essays...  nothing, it just sits there collecting dust...

Builds:

The Toaster Project! Northern Bee!

The original LAN PC build log! (Old, dead and replaced by The Toaster Project & 5.0)
