AMD dropped the ball with the AM4 specifications for AIO coolers

B_Thats far from an elegant solution

C_ mounting hardware is available soon, i can just wait and run at 3.5ghz until then.

you know the cpu will shut off if the temps get too high right you can't fry a cpu with inaduquate cooling

For everyone in this thread with an Asetek based AIO (list) they sell cheap mounting kits on their ebay page, and will likely have an AM4 kit there too whenever it's ready for 5 USD

http://stores.ebay.com/Asetek

muh specs

Gaming and HTPC (reparations)- ASUS 1080, MSI X99A SLI Plus, 5820k- 4.5GHz @ 1.25v, asetek based 360mm AIO, RM 1000x, 16GB memory, 750D with front USB 2.0 replaced with 3.0  ports, 2 250GB 850 EVOs in Raid 0 (why not, only has games on it), some hard drives

Screens- Acer preditor XB241H (1080p, 144Hz Gsync), LG 1080p ultrawide, (all mounted) directly wired to TV in other room

Stuff- k70 with reds, steel series rival, g13, full desk covering mouse mat

All parts black

Workstation(desk)- 3770k, 970 reference, 16GB of some crucial memory, a motherboard of some kind I don't remember, Micomsoft SC-512N1-L/DVI, CM Storm Trooper (It's got a handle, can you handle that?), 240mm Asetek based AIO, Crucial M550 256GB (upgrade soon), some hard drives, disc drives, and hot swap bays

Screens- 3  ASUS VN248H-P IPS 1080p screens mounted on a stand, some old tv on the wall above it.

Stuff- Epicgear defiant (solderless swappable switches), g600, moutned mic and other stuff.

Laptop docking area- 2 1440p korean monitors mounted, one AHVA matte, one samsung PLS gloss (very annoying, yes). Trashy Razer blackwidow chroma...I mean like the J key doesn't click anymore. I got a model M i use on it to, but its time for a new keyboard. Some edgy Utechsmart mouse similar to g600. Hooked to laptop dock for both of my dell precision laptops. (not only docking area)

Shelf- i7-2600 non-k (has vt-d), 380t, some ASUS sandy itx board, intel quad nic. Currently hosts shared files, setting up as pfsense box in VM. Also acts as spare gaming PC with a 580 or whatever someone brings. Hooked into laptop dock area via usb switch

Well, at least upgrade kits are shipping, X370 motherboards are showing, pretty much all of them in stock where I live. Lack of those mobos for some time looked a bigger issue though. Bios updates are getting release so that's great.

So what doesn't makes sense? The fact that some of you are responding to AMD's incompetence with not-so-tongue-in-cheek comments about zip ties? Don't answer that was more rhetorical I am zipping this tangent effective immediately.

I don't know why people use Zipties....when Meccano works far better and provides everything (silicon washers, plastic spacers, steel washers etc....). Zipties can't provide enough pressure unlike Meccano:

But the same principle applies (except with silicon washers on the underside instead of plastic ones+the bracket, and a washer onto of it to prevent the screw from pulling through)

Long story short, its far better than the push pin method, lasts far longer and is more durable than what most manufacturers use, and as long as you can sort of get the mounting holes lined up correctly it will work (I'd be using springs as well, but they are on my LGA775 motherboard atm).

Expecting a flawless CPU launch was delusional. That said, waiting a few weeks would have really helped AMD with their image at launch, I don't know, they could've been having some pressure placed on them by their major stock holders to release on time, but I don't think we'll ever know.

Joking aside that's not a bad point: Even with a custom water loop and (arguably but still) lots of experience the best Jay could do after waiting for better ram, better Bios, etc. was 4.1 stable with far too much power and 4.0 on more sane voltage.

So it really doesn't looks like overclocking the chip with water is really going to do much like maybe 200 or 300mhz squeezed with really high end solutions and lots of patience.

Jay didn't know about the 20c offset, and thus was afraid to turn up the voltage.

Temps are 20 offset on the AMD tool too?

I think so.

Jay was getting 45c idle temps, which really doesn't make sense unless you subtract 20.

I'm interested to know said reason since it's been months and we still have seen fuckall in the way of hardware from intel.

If i had to guess it was because they had plans for a q1 release that could not be delayed because of contracts.

They possibly wanted to maximize the time they had before intel could respond as sales of ryzen are vital to amds future

soo they rushed it out...we knew this same with mobo's and if mobo's aren't available for cooler companies then duh they wouldn't have time to do that. Still it's been a few weeks now so they should be on top of it with current products by now if they just dedicated 1 person to make new mounting gear as an engineer to this project.

So you think all the math, design, prototyping, testing, and mass production is ramped up in a couple weeks? I guarantee you Intel gave Asetek and others the full specs of the LGA3467 socket and how it would be integrated on motherboards a good 4-5 months in advance of launch so liquid cooled servers could just come flying off the shelves for Knight's Landing.

Don't think it is done typically, but do think it CAN be done. I mean 3/4 of be quiet's coolers worked on launch and the rest have received kits. Then again what do I know I've only done contracted work for modifications similar to these in a few hours with 4-5 revisions.

BTW, if the mounting pressure of AM3 coolers is the problem-just look at alternative non cable tie methods to replace the screws/pins.

That's one option.

But again: what is wrong with expecting AMD not to completely fucking botch communication with their business partners and either give them the info they need or delay the launch slightly to avoid all of this?

This is beyond just a technical problem but is a pretty significant business relationships problem: we should not normalize the fact that apparently several manufacturers were angry enough at AMD to vent it out in public to call them out and see if that has any effect on them since normal communication channels apparently do not work.

^^ Yeah, this ^^.

This whole launch feels like a rushed 'day-before-it's-due' school project in a way where AMD (barely) had their act together and failed to inform the rest of the team when they were done.

It's understandable that AMD wanted to be rather 'hush-hush' about the chips themselves I guess and 'surprise' Intel with the launch, but couldn't they ask for confidentiality from the board vendors if that was the case?

Even if that was a concern: providing pressure numbers and the tolerances for a bunch of screws and metal plates doesn't gives out much about the actual fucking chip.

If its an AM3 specific cooler...the result of alternative mounting methods just means that people will be able to continue using the coolers which they've been using for years (over a decade in a lot of instances), and that cooler manufacturers lose out making them put pressure on AMD to do the right thing for the next socket instead of rushing shit forward with minimal notification and time to prepare.
