  • This caused community outrage, which Ubisoft responded to in a live Q&A.

  • game director Damien Kieken: "We never had an intention for you to unlock everything in the game.”

  • “For us that doesn't really make any sense. We applied RPG mechanics on top of a fighting game in a PvP environment. Let's say in World of Warcraft, you would never try to unlock everything for all the characters. Same thing in any MOBA."

  • People are pissed: They already paid full price for a game and don’t want to have to pay to have the game’s core content delivered in a timely fashion.

Apple explores using an iPhone or iPad to power a laptop

Source 1: https://www.engadget.com/2017/03/23/apple-explores-using-an-iphone-or-ipad-to-power-a-laptop/

Source 2:  https://www.neowin.net/news/new-apple-patent-suggests-possible-use-of-the-iphone-or-ipad-to-power-a-laptop

  • The USPTO issued a patent filing detailing how an iPhone or an iPad could be used to power an ultra-portable laptop

  • The patent filing shows off multiple forms of a potential "electronic accessory."

    • One features a slot near the trackpad area where you can drop in an iPhone, which provides all of the hardware necessary to run the Macbook-looking ultraportable. iPhone would also serve as the actual trackpad.

    • Another concept describes sliding an iPad in the screen area to power the accessory.

    • Apple also considers plugging additional batteries and GPU hardware in the accessory base to buoy the performance of the iPhone or iPad

  • Basically a ripoff of the Superbook: https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/andromium/the-superbook-turn-your-smartphone-into-a-laptop-f

BlackBerry’s new app prevents others from peeping at your screen

Google Chrome is 'least pwnable' browser in hacking tournament

Source 1: http://www.theinquirer.net/inquirer/news/3007103/google-chrome-is-least-pwnable-browser-in-hacking-tournament

Source 2:  http://www.i-programmer.info/news/149-security/10621-microsoft-edge-falls-victim-at-pwn2own-.html

  • Google Chrome was the 'least pwnable' browser in the 10th annual Pwn2Own hacking tournament at Vancouver's CanSecWest conference.

  • Firefox was attacked twice, once successfully, in part due to its use of sandboxing.

  • Microsoft Edge cost $300,000 in bounties for 5 vulnerabilities, putting it bottom of the list.

  • Safari was hacked three times, plus once more by an exploit that already had a fix in beta

  • But Google Chrome made it through unscathed, with the only attack on it not being completed in time.

  • "pwn" attempts were at the whim of the contestants, so the decision to go after Edge may have been based on the knowledge that it would give them the most leverage to score points in the competition.

  • For the first time this year, a "pwn" on a virtual machine was accomplished with an exploit for VMWare.

GameStop expects the Switch to be hard to find through 2017

Source 1: https://arstechnica.com/gaming/2017/03/gamestop-expects-the-switch-to-be-hard-to-find-through-2017/

Source 2:

  • CEO predicts "Wii-like" sales potential amid instant sell-outs of new shipments.

  • GameStop COO Tony Bartel: “We anticipate that we're going to be chasing supply this entire year."

  • "there is tremendous demand for this, and we just don't know how high it is because every time we get it out in our stores it's literally gone."

  • The average Switch buyer at GameStop also bought 5.5 related products:

    • (including both Switch games and accessories) along with the system.

    • "They're picking up anything they can," Bartel said.

    • “Breath of the Wild has an "almost one-to-one attach result," Bartel said, meaning practically every Switch customer also picks up a copy of the game.

Google unveils Android O with developer preview

Source 1: https://arstechnica.com/gadgets/2017/03/hands-on-with-android-o-snooze-that-notification-and-customize-everything/

Source 2:  http://www.ctvnews.ca/sci-tech/google-unveils-android-o-with-developer-preview-1.3337555

  • Lots of new, boring changes!

  • New ability to do system-wide notification snoozing. If you don't want to deal with a notification right now, just pull it to the side a bit  to unveil a new "clock" icon. Tap it, and the notification will be automatically snoozed for 15 minutes. You can tap on the drop-down menu to increase the time to 30 minutes or an hour.

  • The top of the notification panel has been reworked yet again

More granular controls over System UI notifications

  • The triple-function Quick Settings buttons are back—tapping on the icon does one thing, tapping on the text does a second function, and long pressing on the icon does a third thing.

    • Example: A tap on the icon turns Wi-Fi on and off, while a long-press opens the full Wi-Fi settings. A tap on the bottom Wi-Fi text will open the Wi-Fi panel. Google started this Quick Settings layout in Lollipop, got rid of it in Marshmallow and Nougat, and now it's back in Android O.

  • Ambient Display is a low-power notification mode that kicks in when the screen is "off." When a notification comes in, or when the device is moved or tapped on, the screen will light up briefly with a white-on-black UI and show you your new notifications.

  • The settings app has been totally reworked.

    • There’s now multiple entry points for a setting in different sections. You no longer have to wonder if the device timeout setting is under "Display" because it's tied to when the display shuts off or "Battery" because it's closely tied to battery usage.

WAN Show: the  windows update strikes edition.

to prevent this do the following (requires windows 10 pro or above)

hit  the start button

type "gpedit.msc" (no quotes)

click on edit group policy

in the left pane click on the little arrows to expand (like the registry editor) :

 local computer policy

 Computer configuration

 Administrative templates

 Windows Components

 click on Windows Update

in the right pane now click on "Configure automatic Updates"

check the enabled radio button

in the drop down menu under "configure automatic updates" choose "notify for download and install"

click apply then ok .

close  the policy editor .

reboot.

now windows will popup a windows telling you updates are available.

click on "open windows update" then close the windows update window.

this will NOT update windows, you must do this manually at your convenience, and not when microsoft decides (like in the middle of the WAN show).

note windows home will ignore this setting, and group policy for that matter, so i dont recommend this on windows 10 home.

the reason i know this is:

at work we have a very slow connection (<2mb/sec) serving 4 computers. our POS programming is cloud based, and when windows updates strikes, our POS ceases to function (windows updates takes all the bandwidth). this prevents us from doing what we get paid to do. so after much research i found this solution, and when windows updates ,it is not changing it back at this time.
