More disappoint even is this CPU have an iGPU instead of being 5c/10t - 6c/12t

if it's indeed 7740K, then it's Kaby-X

Actually the X stuff has always been a generation number behind so it would be skylake if they continued their naming conventions.

Why 4790K?

Because Intel is stupid with naming, and the 4790K was basically a replacement for the 4770K. they needed a new number that was similar.

the 7740K isn't a replacement for the 7700K as they're on a different chipset.

you are not right

generation behind?! X99 was 1st, then 100 series so what are you talking about?

So they added .1 Ghz to base clock have a new fancy name, new socket and consumes more power?

That was my point lol.  It's the same with i3/i5/i7.  Odd numbers starting with 3 for no apparent reason.

All they have done is started putting the current generation low core count chips on the enthusiast platform too so you can still use enthusiast platform without giving up the best gaming chips like you would have had to do with X99.

Skylake-x will be high core count lower speed where kabylake-x will be lower count higher speed.  Then when the next gen comes out we'll likely see high core count kabylake-x and low core count of that generation.

That is why it is 7740k.  Because the Skylake-X will be 7800k, ect and then when kabylake-x hits high core counts it will start at 8800k and we'll have the next generation 8740k.  At least that's the way I see it.

There's something cool here - you just can't see it.

I messed up my words. I meant the chips that went with the x boards. The new 6950x for example is broadwell instead of skylake as the 6xxx would have suggested. The 5820k was haswell not broadwell.

Fair point, but you're still skipping 2/4/6, and there's no reasoning for the numbers anyway.

This is stupid.  It won't offer much of a performance boost over the i7-7700k, AND you'll NEED a motherboard that costs just as much as the CPU.

Plus, I thought we already ditched quad cores for the HEDT platform.

Who's idea was this?  Please tell me, because I'd like to slap him.

This was a great idea.  You get people into the HEDT cheaper and maybe they'll buy a new higher core count chip for it later.

This also allows gamers access to the HEDT platform and it's perks without having to suffer the lower clock speeds and generation older architecture.

It will however offer things like more pcie lanes and an upgrade path. I could see picking up one of these if I knew I wanted to eventually move up to 8 cores or something but didnt have the money now. Also I wonder what the price is going to look like. The 6 core (at least at my local microcenter) has alwasy been pretty close with the high end overclocking i7 on consumer boards (z stuff).

I'm also pretty sure that with the next generation we'll see the Kabylake-x high core count chips start at 8 cores and the Clake-x starting at 6 as the consumer level is likely getting 6 core in the next generation.

Entry level starts at 4 cores, but Intel need to sell at a lower price than mainstream to get people onboard the HEDT platform. Then it won't make any sense either, when you're going high-end just get a 6 core.
