The S12 has better components that are capable of running better than the XT when heat builds up.  Heat will cause cheap parts to degrade and eventually fail.  Cheap parts will also usually mean instability when the unit is being stressed.

 

I mean, you can take a chance with the XT.  It might be totally fine, I would not though.

 

I have an old PC with a 750 Ultra LSP.  It is not a high quality unit, but it has been running steadily for almost 7 years now.  My XFXPRO 750W PSU (Seasonic built) runs fine too (3.5 years).  :D

 

I actually bought a Corsair CXM 550W as a back up recently... just in case one of the PSUs fail.

 

@DaemonWarrior44  I should mention, MEC is right... the 520W S12-ii is cutting it pretty close.  The 12v rail used to power the GPU and CPU will provide 480W total, not 520W.  That is 40 amperes (amps) on that 12V rail.  40A x 12v = 480W

 

It should still work fine.

Don't know why some of you are recommending PSU's that are just enough. I would say 650w minimum. Will keep the PSU running at it's more efficient range and give you more headroom for future upgrades.

A good quality 550w will work fine, it just doesn't leave much headroom. Personally, I think about what I may want to run in the future and choose accordingly so I don't have to upgrade again later on. A good PSU these days can last you well beyond 5 years. Just thinking out loud...

I understand what you mean, but he is not going to pull much more than 450W at max system load.  lol, I have two PCs, each running 750W PSUs... each probably not even pulling half that.  This is because I was never sure, so I overdid it.

I agree. My system has an EVGA GS850 which is crazy overkill for what I have now (the fan pretty much never even turns on, lol), but 2 years ago I was running crossfire 290's so it was necessary at the time. 

 

Personal preference I guess. Even though the RX 480 is only a 150w GPU, I would still go for a 650w for CF 480's, just for the little added peace of mind and headroom in case I change things up later on and need the extra grunt. ;)

He's got an 850W because he was running two R9 290s, each drawing well over 200W.

Well imo, you should add twice the power consumption of both cards, then add some 200-300W for good headroom. Like for CF RX 480s / GTX 1060s you should do 650W, for CF GTX 1080s that's 750W, for CF 1080 Tis that's 850-950.

That's an 800W PSU?  150Wx2x2 = 600W... then add 200W more?

I think 200-300W headroom on a build that is starting with Crossfire doesn't make sense.

Well 200-300W is there so the user doesn't have to worry about overclocking a 140W chip like a Broadwell-E which will easily go over 150W when OC, plus anything else. A savvy user can do less headroom while being aware of their system's power consumption, but a savvy user doesn't need a rule of thumb :D
