Did I just kill something in my PC?

For some background information, my computer shut off while it was sitting at the desktop and now it won't turn back on. I've tried unplugging everything, jumping the power pins, clearing the CMOS, but nothing has worked.

If I press the power button (or try to jump the pins) there is just a brief flash of light from my H100i V2's waterblock led and then nothing.

BUT if I unplug the CPU power from the motherboard and press/hold the power button, the waterblock led flashes, the radiator fans spin with the flashing, the audio boost led flashes, and the GPU fans spin with the flashing but they all stop after about four flashes. I have to turn the PSU power off and back on before I can make it flash again.

Any ideas what is wrong/dead?

Why does it seem like every time there's a post about a system that just randomly shuts down and won't start back up again... it always involves a Corsair CX PSU...

I wish I could test what was wrong but since this was my first build (last July) I don't have any spare parts lying around. I'm tempted to go out and buy an EVGA Supernova 850 G2 but I don't want to spend the money if that's not the problem.

They're one of the most popular budget PSUs, so you're going to have a lot more of them in budget builds, most of which cut corners one way or another. Correlation does not always mean causation.

But yeah, they do seem to be above standard deviation in terms of being in failed PCs.

Corsair CX psu user here. No problems with it.

Try psu with mobo by themselves and see if it boots. Yes, then your other parts are faulty.

It won't boot at all even with the PSU and motherboard by themselves. The CPU power cord being plugged in is causing the problem. The waterblock led flickers for a split second then goes off with it plugged in.

You mean the 8 pin? Then it's your board that's no good, not the psu.

Try plugging with just 4 pins.

Yep. Try both sides of the 8 pins, left section and right section.

It just flashes for a split second but there is a sort of a clicking sound from the PSU when the power button is hit.

I included two videos to show what is happening visually.

Can't see anything from those clips. So did you just try plugging in just 4 pin? The 8 pin is like 2x 4pins glue together. Have you try first set of 4 pins and then the 2nd set?

And disconnect everything this also means removing it from your board.

Yes I unplugged everything and still no post. I can feel the PSU fan blowing out air but no post as the audio boost led just blinks.

Using 6 out of the 8 pins also makes it flash on and off

Well it's obvious there will not be any POST since your ram and GPU have been removed from the motherboard. With only the 24 pin plugged in, does the system stay on. plug a case fan to the board to monitor it.

Nope, nothing stays on. The audio boost led light is on and blinking but the case fan doesn't stay on.

It looks like it's trying to turn but nothing. It's like the fan tries to start in surges.

Looks like your board might be faulty.

Had a system with the same problem. Turns out it was the 8 pin. Leaving that out and with only the 24 plugged in, the system powers on. There won't be any screen on the monitor due to missing 8 pin, but the system stays on until I had to unplug the power cord. There are other system I've encountered with the same type of problem and it was cause by bad ram sticks to faulty front USB/audio ports. Without any spare parts, your best option would be to test each part one by one outside of the case. Now if you have a stock cpu cooler use that during the test.

Yeah I'll try tinkering around with it later to try to make it work and thanks for the advice.

I was planning on building an entirely new system in a few months anyway but I wasn't expecting my current build to die out on me.

Well Ryzen is out so it's a great time to upgrade. Worst time to have a broken PC is when you know new parts out coming out but they won't be until end of the year and you need a computer now.

Yeah exactly my thoughts. It isn't the worst time to have a dead pc.
