How old is your son? If older than 16 and has done something that makes him deserve it, no, not stupid at all. However, if he has done absolutely nothing for him to deserve it then yes, it was stupid :P

Purchase Wise: Only if you are running a 1080p monitor or something like that. If your son games, or uses computers for some other power intensive task frequently then those are some damn good options if you have the bones.

 

Parenting Wise: I had to work really hard in high school to convince my parents to pay for the parts for my gaming PC, headline components being a 760 and a 3rd gen intel i5. Getting this computer built was my motivation for turning my grades around in school. If your son deserves these parts and will use them to better himself or at least hang out with other nice people, then you are a pretty cool parent. If not, I think you may have missed out on teaching your kid a valuable lesson about value.
