SLI GTX 580's

Vegetable

Hi all. Today we're going to take a look at my magical GTX 580's and how they perform in today's harsh world of $200 GPU's that nearly topple previous flagship cards (RX 480/GTX 1060 Vs. GTX 980.) First off, I'd like to say shout out to @Ryan Leech for inspiring my dumbass to build this system. Instead of boring you with a heartwarming tale of how I fell in love with the 580, I'll just be honest. I got into PC's when I was 10. What was the flagship card when I was 10? The GTX 580. I've wanted one since then. Nuff said.

So how do 580's run stuff nowadays? Glad you asked. I ran my system through some benchmarks to find out. In no particular order, here's the results:

---GTA V---

These are the settings I run at, they provide gorgeous visuals whilst not running out of VRAM. NOTE - VSYNC WAS OFF DURING TESTING

gta5settings1.png.fe30ab638034333ea114acb749dc9045.png

gta5settings2.png.53dfe37b1f5da80ad630808738080fbb.pnggta5settings3.png.a746b0632a16cd68442b10bd079ba652.pnggta5settings4.png.34117eba3992790b016c153b028c03ee.png

And here's the results of the built in benchmark at the aforementioned settings:

gta5results.png.c25c7947dfba3ab23ef1134ef140fe13.png

---Bioshock Infinite---

I used the built in benchmark with the Ultra DX11 preset. These were the results:

---Unigine Heaven 4.0---

I ran it on the Extreme preset, which is max settings 900p 8x MSAA. In return I got:

heaven.png.357075390e63773375fcc8317e43256c.png

---3DMark Firestrike---

I usually keep my 8350 at 4.8Ghz daily, but for benchmarks like Firestrike, I crank her up to 5Ghz.

Results found here: http://www.3dmark.com/fs/12082727

So yeah there's the 580's for ya. Not in SLI either card CAN do 900Mhz stable, but in SLI I can't seem to get passed 850Mhz core and be stable in ALL my games. I can't give a logical reason why this is my main system in 2017, especially considering I BUILT IT about 8 months ago. This is the best way I can summarize my PC (at least in my eyes), is this right here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sbTki7PeE5c

My PC might not be the latest and the greatest, but it throws punches WAY above its class. Did I mention this whole rig cost me/is worth about $500? Thanks for the read :D

---EXTRA STUFF---

Here's how my 8350 handles Cinebench whilst @ 5Ghz, for those of you wondering:

 Cinebench@5Ghz.png.8daa0c69d9347a531d1958a3b5f531da.png

And here's what this ugly thing looks like:

20170103_164846.thumb.jpg.01c685d47b3e57eaf10d0b94f5b6d5b7.jpg

And yes, for those of you who have paid oddly close attention, my Kraken X61 is NOT supported by my Source 210, so I did end up mounting the fans outside the chassis and routed the cables in through a little unused hole above my rear exhaust fan. If you've made it this far you're a trooper. +10 brownie points for you.

CPU: INTEL Core i7 4790k @ 4.7Ghz - Cooling: NZXT Kraken X61 - Mobo: Gigabyte Z97X SLI - RAM: 16GB G.Skill Ares 2400mhz - GPU: AMD Sapphire Nitro R9 Fury 4G - Case: Phanteks P350X - PSU: EVGA 750GQ - Storage: WD Black 1TB - Fans: 2x Noctua NF-P14s (Push) / 2x Corsair AF140 (Pull) / 3x Corsair AF120 (Exhaust) - Keyboard: Corsair K70 Cherry MX Red - Mouse: Razer Deathadder Chroma

Bit of an AMD fan I suppose. I don't bias my replies to anything however, I just prefer AMD and their products. Buy whatever the H*CK you want.

Yeah the 980 is plenty good and will be able to run just about any game for at least 3 more years. Your i5 is likely going to need upgrading before your 980 does.

Very true, just waiting for Ryzen5 and possibly Vega than will move this whole rig onto the Mrs and upgrade. for the moment its holding up great to editing and gaming (runs at 4.0GHz)

What is your 8350 voltage at to achieve that clock speed?

5Ghz is 1.52v under Aida64 load. 4.8Ghz is only 1.47v under that same load.

You really had to push the voltage. How are the temps?

At 5Ghz it goes over my comfort zone of 60c, at 4.8Ghz it REFUSES to go over 55c, even after a 12 hour Aida64 run.

They claim 62 was the MAX safe temp, but I've had it at 5.2Ghz @ 1.6v just to run Cinebench and it was at like 74c core 80c package but it didn't crash until AFTER I stopped the test lmao.

Depends on the res and settings. Im addicted to running everything at max in 3440x1440p and right now all current gen games like wild lands and mass effect require a 1080ti to do that. Along with dues Ex. Id say if his goal is maxing out games in even 1080p hell need to upgrade from the 980 before the i5 but thats just my opinion.

Still could damage your CPU from my understanding of the Bulldozer architecture.

I love to see others embrace the Fermi lifestyle! My SLI GTX 580s are serving me well in 2017 as well. I recently retired the 465s from 3-way SLI use due to the 1GB of VRAM not being sufficient. My FX 6350 is also going into its fourth year of being overclocked to 5GHz. I'm proud that you stuffed that X61 into the Source 210 like I did with the X60 in mine!

This build makes me so happy :x

Don't you remember the scandal a while back about 970s only being able "to use" 3.5GB out of the total 4GB at full speed?

I'm likely going to build an nforce LGA775 system around them to continue the 3-way domination. But for now 580s are king!!!

Best of luck finding a 775 board that supports 3-way and isn't like $200. And yes, the 580's reign supreme fuck the haters
