Check what bands the carriers support. There should be a Wiki. That'll tell you if they support 2G.

Not sure why you'd want it though.

i know for sure the big three dont have it, and smaller companies that use their network don't have it either(PC mobile, virgin, fido, koodo, primus)

Canada's a very broad place with many different telecom operators, so to give you an assertive statement on whether or not a technology is (still) being used would be difficult.

While I dont live in Canada. I here Verizon wireless plans to kill 3G service in the next few years. They want to push the spectrum to 4G and 5G. I would guess your wireless providers are also looking in to doing that.

I remember AMPS 800 and in school we shorted a few pins on the cell phone and we could hear random convo's.

It was cool back in the day.
