Maximum ram limit for dell inspiron 1420

Hi, I am planning to upgrade my old Dell inspiron 1420 ram. As I know that the chipset is GM965, the official document claim that it can support up to 4GB of ddr2, but some website claim that it can actually support 8GB, but due to dell bios restriction, the maximum ram for dell 1420 is 6GB instead. So, I would like your advice, if my machine can support 4GB or 6GB max.

If you can change the bios settings, then go for 6gb

Actually I have not test it out, just some website claim it could be able go to 6GB due to bios, just like to know how true is that.

According to the spec sheets I've been able to find (sorry, no links since they're internal documents that I am not allowed to release) the maximum is 4 gb.

While it might be a bios restriction, you'd have to create a custom rom and flash it over your original bios files, which isn't really recommended. I'd say stick to 4 gigs

I'm planning to go for 4GB upgrade from 2GB, but due to 32bit windows limitation, I'll need to use 64bit OS. As I know that the 64 OS uses more resources than 32 bit. So does 4GB of ram on 64 bit windows 7 has any improvement of 32bit windows 7 on 2GB ram? The reason I am thinking of upgrade is because my laptop is very slow due to frequent virtual memory swap. I have actually tried 2GB on 64 bit windows 7 previously, and it was painfully slow, and I believe it was due to the double amount of memory swap by the 64 memory space.
