Personal Folding Server Rig - Project Steamroller

Quick Personal Update:

Well a lot has changed since I first posted this. (yes this is a self necro, it is allowed since it's my topic) Work became ...well ... work and I was killing myself to keep my head above water and never made any headroom for the amount of time I was putting in over the last 3 years. So as of February of this year I resigned my job as a Security Manager (3rd in line from the owner) and started focusing on new, better things. I have started my own business and began moving forward. With that I have renewed my interest in getting some old projects into perspective as well. This project being one of those.

Since I will need a server of some type I have decided to get this one going a stay on the dual/triple use I originally planned on with one exception, I plan to host my website on this as well so win/win for me. :)

Project Update:

The focus has changed quite a bit since the Tesla GPUs are on the whitelist finally . . . well have been for a little while but they weren't when I started this endevour.

I recently came across a good deal for K40's and I am considering on getting some of these. Also I came across a deal on an 8 gpu server and its a 2U rack. A company recently pulled a pallet full of Cray CS-Storm 2226 servers from somewhere in Colorado and I am going to try and get my hand one or 2.

Equipment:

  • Server: Cray CS-Storm 2626X8 2U High Density multi-GPU Hybrid Rackmount Server Barebone
  • GPU: NVIDIA Tesla K40 GPU 12GB GDDR5 PCIe 3.0 x 16
  • CPU: E5-2620 v3 or E5-2650 v3
  • RAM: DDR4 up to 1024GB
  • Storage: ADATA Crucial or Western Digital SSD's.(Im partial to Crucial or WD but that is not priority for the moment

Quick rundown of new prices

  1. Server    669.99
  2. GPUx 4: 439.96‬
  3. CPUx 2: 180.00
  4. RAM: UNK waiting on quote from source.
  5. Approx. total $1300.00 - $1500USD

Please no negative comments on the age of K40's, I am aware of how old they are. K80's, M40's, M60's, P100's, 2080+ and newer are quite a bit costly beyond my initial budget.

Price and nostogia mostly, always wanted a K40. Paid $100usd each.

Now I can play a joke on my brother... I told him I bought a Tesla, now just waiting to see if he gets the reference - car or gpu. Lol.

8 hours ago, RollinLower said:

that server is a gorgeous piece of kit! absolutely loving it.

is it up and running? what kind of numbers are you seeing on those tesla's?

Absolutely gorgeous yes.

Not up and running yet, I am waiting on a few things But I have run into a snag:

Snag 1:

This server was listed to use E5-26xx V4 Xeons

After I opened the case, I discovered something wrong, the mobo has 2x LGA2011 (R2) Sockets, not 2x LGA2011-3 (R3) Sockets as I was led to believe. Now I have to find a matched pair of E5-26xx V2 Xeons as the V3 and V4 uses the newer socket. 🙄

I have already contacted the seller about rectifying this. I am hoping to come to an agreeable solution.

If not, I'll keep the server sell the Xeons and buy new ones.

Snag 2:

The PSU's use an older HP- LS-26 connector not C14 connectors. Proprietary to Hewlett Packard. /facepalm.

If anyone reading this not following along... LS-26 connectors are rare'ish to find cords for anymore, for obvious reasons [no longer made].

I have decided that if I keep the server (most likely will) I will pull the PSU's and swap the sockets. I have some old PSU's I can pull C14 sockets from.

*Update*

Snag 1:

This has been resolved, the seller has accepted the return of the incorrect Xeons and I found another set of matched Xeons from a different seller; this time they are 10core @2.8Ghz [E5-2680 V2]. These should be delivered in about 1-2 weeks 5-7 days.

The seller of the server has also offered to partial refund me 1/6th of the price I paid for the mess-up ... sweet.

The story: apparently the seller had two versions of the server pulled from the data center, though I ordered the server for the E-26xx V3 the employee that boxed and shipped the server for the E5-26xx V2. These are the same series of Xeon but the Socket of the LGA layout changes from the V2 to V3.  V1, V2 use the 2011 (R2) socket as the V3, V4 use the 2011-3 (R3) socket. Yeah I was confused at first as well, apparently this was when Intel decided to updated the LGA layout... instead of waiting for the next series to make the change. 🤷‍♂️ Oh well.

Snag 2:

Since I decided to keep the server I will be swapping out the sockets from the LS-26 with C13 sockets from some old PSU's I have on hand in the garage, the swap should be easy enough, I have solicited some assistance for this. The sockets don't matter to much as the power draw is close to the same and the socket makes no difference, the C-14 cord will be ample to cover the power draw any how as I wont be over loading the requirements.

this server gets better every time you post pictures!

the way the GPU's are mounted in their own little container with their own contained airflow path is just :x

Is PCIe hotswap a thing on these?

Update 14June2020

<Insert pandemic excuse...>

So I now have received and installed all parts.

To-Do list:

  • Install OS WIN10 Pro (plan is to see if this will work best before I invest in WinServer 2019)
  • Test boot, yaddy yada...
  • Stress Test, This will be a F@H and BOINC run for about a week.

This will take a few days as I have moved the server to my Dads, due to a power supply issue at my home (big oops on my part) I will have to run this at his place until that issue is resolved. Also I need to switch my IP to Static.. yay more cost.

i've been running my F@H server on 10 Pro for a long while with no real problems. when remoting into it you shouldn't use the built-in windows tool tough. BOINC doesn;t like the virtual GPU that creates, tough somehow F@H works fine with it.

I'll need the static IP for the Email Server and the Website host.

Technically I could do this with a Dynamic IP but I plan to let be as maintenance minimalistic as possible as I have a business to run and I dont plan to hire out an IT dedicated position for quite sometime.

I am not to worried about remote access or anything like that. I use TeamViewer already for most of my and my families PC's so this will just be added to that account.

I F@H and BOINC on my main rig mostly with no issue (see my badges lol) and it has been running WIN10 Preview for the last 5+ years. My only concern with this build was whether or not I wanted to invest in Windows Server since I have 2x 10core processors. I am sure WIN10 will be able to handle it.

This is my first server build so some learning to go with this. ;)

So we came across a new development and are in talks with the seller.

Issue: the PSU's shipped with the unit are 200-277v units not the 110-130v units that were supposed to be installed.

I missed this initially since when I bought the unit it was with the understanding the I was using in a home setting and not a datacenter environment. I hope the seller can find the proper replacements (they are looking) but I am getting a bit frustrated since I am at roughly shy a $1000USD into this project and this has become another major issue with the seller. Hopefully this wont be a lynchpin and I have to start over.

If anyone wants to or could assist me in finding an alternative here is the model number of the psu:

Model: PSSH162202A

Maker: Samsung

Input: 200-277v

          50-60hz

          10A

Output: +12V : 133A

             +5v : 6A

What I need is the 120volt variant. Last I spoke to the seller he was looking for the model number but didnt have it on hand, I am not hopeful he has it but I know they do as they haad a client with the same issue they admitted and had to replace his psu the same as mine so I know they have it.

Feel idiotic for missing this particular and major detail.

that's rough. this project has definietly seen some bumps in the road so far. :(

if all else fails you could maybe get a transformer to change your voltage to 220? tough the seller has definitely dropped tha ball on this one. again.

Why not just install a 220V outlet wherever you're putting the server?  The power into your house is 220V, so you just need to tap off an existing 220V circuit in your house (electric dryer, water heater, HVAC/electric heat, and electric stove/oven) or run a new circuit from your panel.

I have no 220 circuits in this house unfortunately and I cant add one, service to this home is 100amp.

Are you in the US?  Standard service is typically 200A, single phase 220V, unless you're in a really old house that hasn't been updated.

I live in Iowa. The home was built in the 1911, but it was remodeled 4 years ago and no the remodeler did not update the the service to 200 amps. At the time I was not worried about it and it has crossed my mind to update that 200 but it will take a bit of effort to do so.

The remodeler I bought this off of opted to put gas stove and dryer in the house instead of increasing the service. /shrug. The two items I have in my home that has the largest draw is my pc and my microwave. lol.

SansVarnic I have really enjoyed reading through this thread about your F@H server!!

I've thought about doing something like that, but then I struggle with the idea of just updating my families personal computers instead.

What I mean is, instead of putting 6 or 8 GPU's in one Folding server ... my thought is to put two GPU's (likely 1080ti's) in my wife's PC ... two GPU's in my kids' PC ... two GPU's in my own PC ... two GPU's in my Dad's PC.

With all the points/WU's coming back to my username.  I guess one thought is if one computer goes down, at least some of the computers are still Folding??

I guess it's like they say, several different ways to accomplish the same task?
