ESXI will run on pretty much anything. What you need to budget for is how any VMs your running on top. Each VM (if running windows OS on top) should have a minimum 2 cores, 4GB RAM. Preferably more for best performance

Okay thats good to know, and yeah I don't plan on running many windows VMs. Main one is going to be linux or BSD and the rest are just random things I decide to play with. Just want to make sure its all compatible with ESXI since I hear its really picky.

What network card does the board have?

You might has to get a network card, as esxi has bad network card support, and you need a detected network card to install it.

Id get a cheaper psu, a 360w gold from seasonic will be much cheaper and have a very small difference on power usage.

Id get 32gb of ram. 16 is a bit low for vm's

Why not get a used server like a r710?

As for the network card I'm not sure, it has 2 so hopefully they work since I dont have room really to put a dedicated nic in there since i have plans for the pcie slot

Yeah i switched up the PSU a bit since looking into things, thanks.

As for the RAM im trying to keep it somewhat budget friendly and I'll upgrade to 32 eventually, I just want 16 to play around with for now, I'm not planning on doing lots of VMs.

I'll have to take a look into that r710 server more, thats pretty cheap. I'm just worried about how loud that will be and I guess how long it will live. http://www.ebay.com/itm/Dell-PowerEdge-R710-Virtualization-Server-8-Core-48GB-4x300GB-15K-1-2TB-PERC6i-/171307537270 looks like a good one?

edit: yeah that r710 is loud :( Would need to run an ethernet line to the basement or something

Id buy a used server off ebay.   You can get up to 32 cores for less then the price of that machine.  A used Dell r610 or r710 can be used easily enough.  Or an HP equivalent.

According to the ASRock site, that board has a both an Intel I219-V NIC and an Intel I211-V NIC. A check on the HCL confirms both of these are compatible:

I219-V:

https://www.vmware.com/resources/compatibility/detail.php?deviceCategory=io&productid=42036&vcl=true

I211-V:

https://www.vmware.com/resources/compatibility/detail.php?deviceCategory=io&productid=37601&vcl=true

The rest of the system should be fine if you wanted to run that.

Theyre quite loud and the onboard raid controller only supports up to 2TB drives and i have 4x4TB ones so it seems like a bad choice for me. However the price is nice :(

Depending on the RAID controller you can upgrade it to something to suite your drive needs. :) (Dell H700 is around 100-150 bucks which supports up to 6tb drives last time I checked)
