Google Announces Android O Developer Preview

If it improves battery life i'm all for it. Hopefully I get it on my Nexus 6P, but I probably won't :(

That's unfortunately a manufacturer issue.

Apple is only a tad better with supporting older phones (and even in cases where a significantly older phone gets an update, doesn't necessarily mean it's worth getting the update due to hardware limitations).

Really is that the end of the world though? I mean from a security patch aspect, sure. But from a feature aspect? Eh.

not the end of the world, I just very much dislike it.

why would anyone use a carrier that doesn't let you use whatever phone is available? is this one of those mythical carriers that don't use sim cards or something?

Didn't they say a long time ago that the next version of Android would finally provide setting and homescreen syncing with your google account? That wasn't mentioned right?

New notification system - Might be cool. It has a lot of new features so hopefully some of them will be useful. I will probably use the snooze feature for things like mails a lot.

PIP would have been nice but ever since Android N got multiwindow support I don't really see the point.

Adaptive icons might be cool. Sounds like they will function like live-tiles.

Huge leap forward for color management. Hopefully Samsung will update the S6 to support this. Right now I am limiting my S6 to sRGB which is a bummer, but better than inaccurate colors (if you ask me).

The new additions to the MediaPlayer class might be neat. Maybe MX Player will be able to get AC3 support without having to download a modified codec pack.

By the time my S6 gets N it will already have been superseded. Great job Samsung *slow clap*

I already have Nougat on my Galaxy S6.

If you don't have it then Samsung is either doing a staged rollout and you will get it shortly, or your carrier is blocking the update.

Hopefully this means Bluetooth 5 in most new mobile devices including in-ear monitors by the end of the year. Am excite.

Does Bluetooth 5 even have anything related to IEMs in the spec?

As far as I know, it will only increase range and speed, which I don't think has been an issue for Bluetooth audio before.

We should, brother. Images have come out for 5X (mine) and 6P, hopefully we get the official release.

Hm, a beta build just seeded to my 5X this morning updating it to Android 7.1.2 stable from the RC before that had freezing issues occasionally

I'm happy, I guess

idk

It'll allow for increased bitrates over what we have now with better connectivity. It's just up to the implementation, it won't do it by default.

Bandwidth isn't the reason for poor audio quality over Bluetooth.

You only need ~1Mbps for lossless audio. Bluetooth 3 can do a theoretical 24Mbps.

The problem with Bluetooth audio is the horrible codec support (the fallback is heavily based on MP2, not even MP3) and I don't think that is getting fixed in Bluetooth 5.

Bluetooth audio is designed in such a way that it can't just use any codec you want. It has a very short list of naively supported codecs (which are mostly optional and often not implemented), and everything else gets converted to SBC (based on MP2).

Bluetooth audio won't get better until a new codec standard is in place.

I hear that come up a lot, I can see how it can be upsetting. I'm way too impatient to wait for official releases but I've been lucky enough to have devices with good rom support.

Hopefully there are more features incoming in later releases.

I was hoping for more extensive backups including settings, call logs and messages. They could create APIs so it works with third party apps.

While not OS related, I would really like improvements to Chrome performance and power efficiency. It's far behind other platforms.

Dark theme would be nice.

I'm not sure but I think a lot of system stuff still uses OpenGL for rendering, so switching to Vulkan would be nice.

Better LED control would be nice.

Another non-OS thing would be fixing their messaging game. It's a cluster fuck of useless apps right now.

Their color management stuff honestly sounds like it's duct taped on instead of being a system-wide comprehensive solution. A step in the right direction nevertheless I guess.

There is probably more but that's all I could think of right now.

Agreed on most points but the 24 Mbit thing is by piggybacking off WiFi, so it doesn't count - headphones won't support that. I believe it will go from 1 Mbit to 2 Mbit in actual bandwidth. So even with overhead, Bluetooth 5 should have the bandwidth for lossless audio.

Sadly, codecs are a patent and standards cluster fuck.

True, which is why I brought up the implementation. I've had to read through Bluetooth documentation since my company sells products with Bluetooth hardware in them. From my understanding, it'll be more feasible to do higher quality audio streaming over Bluetooth compared to previous versions, but it has to actually be implemented.

If they were able to use Kit Kat with no legal trouble Oreo is probably correct.

Oatmeal Cookie is the only other feasible option I've heard, but it easily takes a back seat to oreo. Orange slice is another candy but even less feasible.

Google got permission to use Kit Kat. There was even a promo for it to get Kit Kat when you buy a new phone running on Kit Kat or something.
