Refurbished Dell T5600 - Xeon E5 2660- Worth it??

Hi Guys. Need some suggestion.

I am planning to get a refurbished Dell T5600 workstation. I am getting it for quite cheap. Full spec:

2 * Intel Xeon E5-2660 (16cores - 32 Threads)

Quadro k4000

128GB RAM DDR3

My main purpose of use is simulations and rendering on 3D software. Software like Houdini, maya, etc. Also want to start experimenting with VR related stuff.

So my questions is,

- Is this a good config for my purpose? Does it make sense to buy such a old config ?

- I am planning to NOT go for the Quadro K4000 and switch it with the new GTX 1080Ti. Will 1080 Ti be compatible with this setup? My assumption is it will be much better for VR related stuff.

My initial plan was to go with the Ryzen 1800x with 1080Ti GPU, but compared to the config I mentioned above I am not sure how big a performance difference there will be especially considering the Ryzen config will be more than twice the price. Also I will be getting 16 cores which is significantly more than 8 core ryzen. Will it be really worth going for the latest Ryzen config.

Pls let me know your suggestions and advice. Thanks in advance.

- L J

I think that this will outpace the  Ryzen system by a bit, not much, but a bit. I think it's worth it.
