I don't really care about performance of SSD's I just want them to go down in price. Once they are as cheap as HDD's or cheaper that would be really great.

The consumer version is going to be replacing the 750 series which is now EOL-notified and soon to stop shippnig completely.

I feel like there needs to be some kind of AI filter bot or something, that just blocks anyone from posting about how "this is too much for my personal rig".  Or other similar things relating to how Enterprise focus products are too expensive and just not worth it for Consumers.  It's like complaining about how it just doesn't make sense to use a semi trailer for your daily driver in the city, so why would any individual person need this thing that is clearly and blatantly focused at businesses.

 

Of course it isn't worth it for your home rig, you don't need the kind of speeds/reliability/sizes that massive data-centers do.

This is an awesome breakthrough. Understand that this is a technology being brought to the market for the first time. Like most technological breakthroughs this will be paid for by large companies so they can develope it further so we can have a consumer version. One of the first flash based SSDs was only 20MB it was made by SanDisk in 91 and cost around $1000. It took almost twenty years before the general consumers could afford it.

Its going to be tough.  I actually do work pretty close to some people involved in this development.  

 

The problem comes from the device structure.  Trying to increase its density means adding more layers to the 3dxpoint structure.  The lithography steps required scales linearly with the number of layers they are trying to make.  I.e. 64 layers = 64 lithography processes, 128 layers = 128 lithography steps.  3dvnand doesnt suffer this problem.  3dxpoint will never be produced as quickly and as cheaply as 3dnand so long as the above is true.

The X25-M was $600 for 80GB and that was in 2008 (yeah I had to google the original cost), so by that metric the P4800X is a bargain!

I think that's only the accelerator memory stuff that needs Z270 (whatever the datacenter variant of that chipset is).  The Optane SSDs should work on everything that supports NVME.

Ah well, I have spent more per gig though, my first personally owned mechanical hard-drive was $625 for a whopping ... 15GB ($41.66 p/GB).

So $4 is not much really I suppose.
