Glory be to AMD, our Lord and savior.

 

Jokes aside, star citizen will be dropping DX 12 for Vulkan. Their reason is that both APIs do basically the same thing, but Vulkan is supported on more platforms. The other interesting part is that they will be completely dropping support for DX 11 eventually. Good riddance. Let that useless API die.

 

This will bring the total number of Vulkan games to 5. I personally don't care whether DX 12 or Vulkan wins the battle of low level APIs ( because I have a GCN card, ehehehe) but with competition, the consumer always wins. The only problem is we all know star citizen is never going to get a full release. /S

As much as I'd like to be happy for Vulkan, I doubt this is little more than a transparent excuse for Roberts to delay the project even more and beg for even more crowdfunding contributions.

If people are willing to pay, I don't see why not. It's not like the being coerced. Apparently they see the value in it. I'm not a backer and the chances I will play when and if it releases are low since I'm not very interested in the game. I'm just happy low level APIs are coming along faster than critics predicted ( not necessarily including this game).

Being mislead is a form of coercion in my book. Roberts it's less than forthcoming so he dances that line.

I think this is a "hidden" problem nowdays, way too many people became tech enthusiasts/nerds instead of gamers.

Everyone fucking cares about performance and benchmark numbers and hypetrains, and "yaa low level metal api bitch". Yeah awesome right? but there are no great NEW games out there anymore, on any API. 

Everyone focuses on pushing graphics and realism, yet i couldnt caare less about graphics. The more realistic the graphics are =/= more fun.

The gameplay elements have not changed since a decade ago, same shit in every game, no new controllers with more precision or anything, same ol' keyb+ mouse or gamepad really? Guess gaming will become interesting again when we will have an usb cable plugged in our brain to control things directly + VR....

You are blaming the wrong crowd. Indie games are thriving on PC. It's the consoles and console peasant mindset that we should blame. The main selling point of every console is graphics and have always been. You can't innovate well on a weak locked down platform with a extremely limited input device.

to use dx12 or vulkan properly there is a lot of underlying re-architecting of the engine to be done to make sure things are well multithreaded. This work is common regardless of whether you use vulkan or dx12. So whatever work they have done is transferrable unless they were actually in the final stages, which they weren't.

 

More than a year back they said they would choose which one to implement. Dx12 or Vulkan. Now they have picked vulkan which is no surprise tbh... What is a surprise is that they are going to drop directx11. Anyway this is a good thing because nobody wants them to waste time and resources. Their target platforms are the below

-windows 7

-windows 8

-windows 10

-Linux

targetting Vulkan allows them to cover all their platforms and have a more unified codebase. That means less time spent porting stuff...

Awesome! I was excited when they mentioned DX12 but Vulkan is amazing too. So using Vulkan they want to unsure to have more people on board cause of older OS support. Glad they're also dropping old API too, good riddance indeed. All games should just be based on one of these from now on anyway. As far as Vulkan multi-GPU support will be on W10 only. But I'd say those that would use multi-GPU will have W10 anyway. I don't see that being a problem at all.

What would be interesting though is to see a game have support for both DX12 and Vulkan would like to see that, at least out of compare heh.

well dx12 was never fully implemented so they are merely dropping the idea of it. The underlying work that they gave done so far to prepare their renderer to support modern graphics APIs is common regardless of vulkan or mantle or dx12. Out of what is implemented so far they are dropping dx11. So this means star citizen will not support any version of directx.

 

It also ensures that their engine's vulkan renderer gets treated as a first class citizen, as it's the only citizen. Everybody working on performance or bugs, and any user reporting performance issues; everybody is on vulkan. A simpler world...

 

compare that to what a company like valve is doing with dota2, maintaining directx9, directx11, opengl and vulkan. I understand that valve supports mac osx as well so opengl is needed but damn all that fragmentation must be a headache.

Vulkan multi-GPU support will work on both Linux and Windows 10. Apparently in the older windows versions the lack of WDDM 2.0 makes it more difficult for some reason.

-nobody wants to waste their time implementing both

-even if you do such comparisons often settle nothing because it can always be argued that the devs implemented API A better and properly optimized it or left out this feature etc..

 

About a year ago there was a tweet to Johan Anderson (frostbite dev) asking him which would be faster DX12 or Vulkan. He basically responded saying that both have the same capabilities it just depends how well you implement it. So in other words the reason Doom works so silky smooth is not just because Vulkan is awesome but also because iD software took their time and used it properly. But not every dev has that competency level as we can see from some of the dx12 ports...

The crusade against DX 12 has been ridiculous. DX 12 actually has a better track record than Vulkan with only 50% of Vulkan games working properly (everyone seems to forget the Talos principle). Most of the DX 12 games are actually doing what they're supposed to be doing now after patches, giving better performance than DX 11. It doesn't help that they don't get retested by big name reviewers or that most of the tests are with Nvidia cards. I can think of only 2 dx12 games that are still broken. The fact the next 2 Vulkan games are gonna be from the same studio/engine are going to skew opinions on this "war of APIs".

Still better than ark survival evolved or DayZ IMO (or any survival/early access game for that matter), and it's $40 so I don't lose much anyways. edit: Star citizen (currently) offers the same amount of gameplay as an $80 game (COD) while only being $40 so it's a (somewhat) decent deal for some people who only play first person shooters.

Dell was having a $600 off sale for the fully specced out model, so I decided to get it :P

 

-Crapbook

Fully specced out early 2013 Macbook "pro" with gt 650m and constant 105c temperature on the CPU (GPU is 80-90C) when doing anything intensive...

A 2013 laptop with a regular sized battery still has better battery life than a 2017 laptop with a massive battery! I think this is a testament to apple's ability at making laptops, or maybe how little CPU technology has improved even 4+ years later (at least, until the recent introduction of 15W 4 core CPUs). Anyway, I'm never going to get a 35W CPU laptop again unless battery technology becomes ~5x better than as it is in 2018.

Apple knows how to make proper consumer-grade laptops (they don't know how to make pro laptops though). I guess this mostly software power efficiency related, but getting a mac makes perfect sense if you want a portable/powerful laptop that can do anything you want it to with great battery life.
