AMD plans a Zen HEDT platform to combat X99?!

zMeul

source ChipHell

via: http://digiworthy.com/2017/03/18/amd-16-core-ryzen-cpu/

1st of, HEDT stands for High End Desktop

we already know Intel already sampled Skylake-X and KabyLake-X since November last year; we also know Intel is planning to replace the current X99 HEDT platform with a new one, the X299

is it plausible AMD plans to introduce a in-between Ryzen and Naples platform? rumors say they'll do it

Quote

The report comes via the infamous Chiphell forums, which states that AMD could unveil its HEDT platform in a couple of months, most likely at this year’s Computex event. The flagship CPU will have 16 cores and 32 threads, with support for quad-channel DDR4 memory. The alleged X399 platform will sit between AMD’s Ryzen desktop CPU and the upcoming Naples server platform.

gaming wise, this platform shouldn't even be considered

computing wise it has the potential to put the screws to Intel, but it greatly depends on what Intel will have to offer and what SKUs AMD will present as alternatives - don't expect pricing to be "normal"

ps: if you're expecting this to be AM4 compatible ... tough luck

unnamed source has confirmed to Heise.DE that AMD is working on a HEDT platform

also, the new socket will be a variation of SP3 (LGA 4094 Naples), SP3r2

I don't think they'd be able to use that nomenclature. You're basically stealing what Intel has already established, and having a naming structure like that makes absolutely no sense, it would only lead to confuse your potential customers.

Also, I don't really see a huge need for a 16 core consumer CPU. Sure, some might want it, but does that really warrant investing the money into an entirely new line?

Your post quite clearly represents the problem with the current marketplace. The enthusiast platforms should never have gone so low in core counts and the like that they are even considered consumer chips. The higher end platforms should be above the needs of the consumer yet below the needs of the server market. For workstation use for example these 16 cores 32 threads will kick ass.

Well I mean, even for Intel you shouldn't look past the highest 4c/8t i7 when it comes to gaming.

You can certainly play games on Ryzen 7 and X99 CPUs, but no, these processors are not meant for gaming in particular.  This is why so many people have been joking about Ryzen 7 getting beat up so bad for not beating the 7700k in games...

Yes, they're priced similarly, but that doesn't mean they're part of the same market.  Stop comparing an SUV to a pickup truck!

There are many people out there that play games on Broadwell-E and Ryzen 7 and what not, but most of these people mainly bought these processors for their workstation performance.  Buying a workstation processor just for playing games is a bad idea.

Why wouldn't they be able to use that nomenclature? It's not like intel can trade mark something like that. The name is literally a description of the product so it can't be trade marked.

Well, Ryzen 7 is just two quad-core chips that have been merged into a monolithic 8 core die :P

Naples seems to be max 32c64t chip, but designed for a 2 socket board.

X399 would seem like a single socket board, so render boxes.  Though I wonder if the 32c64t chips will work as well.

I foresee many "what crazy server box can Linus make this week?" videos.

Well, socket G34 CPUs were MCMs, I thought you were referring to that. Intel isn't that much better though, I mean, have you seen LGA 3647?
