Should I upgrade my i5-750 or GTX 960?

Twitty

Hello,

Should I upgrade my I5-750 @3.2ghz or my GTX 960 to GTX 1060 6GB/RX 480 8GB? That's my next question. If I should upgrade my gpu, should I buy GTX 1060 6GB or RX 480 8GB? Wouldn't my cpu bottleneck it at 1080p?

I'm little tight on budget. Can you recommend what cpu + motherboard + cooler should I get?

What are you exactly doing on your PC?

CPU: Intel Core i7 8700

GPU: Gigabyte GeForce GTX 1070

MOBO: ASUS Z370-F STRIX

RAM: 16GB Corsair Vengeance DDR4 2133MHz

Playing games, mostly. I got into csgo, so I'm considering 144hz in the future. But I'm playing games like Witcher 3, GTA V, Metro Redux etc. I do not want to play the latest titles right now, but I want to play above 60 fps (which I can, but not with MSAA, which is a must in 1080p)

Desired settings on games?

Do you want to record or stream in the future?

Do you edit/render videos?

The 1050Ti is around the 960 performance bracket, doesn't look like a worthwhile upgrade.

I want to play most games on ultra, but I'm fine with high and some other tweaks. No, I don't,

The gtx 1050ti isn't much of an upgrade.

I would recommend the i7 6700k, but if you're tight on budget, an i5 6600k would be fine. Any sort of ASUS Z170 motherboard in your price range would be fine, but I'd recommend taking the Z170 Pro Gaming from ASUS. The 'Z' series motherboards allow full support for overclocking a 'K' series CPU, which will be great for playing games.

If I overclocked the i5 750 to something like 3.6ghz and buy a rx 480 8gb, would it make good performance boost or is the cpu that bad?

The CPU is old architecture, it doesn't just work on cores and frequency.

Well, yeah. I know, but you didn't answer the question.

I did answer it. It doesn't just work on cores and frequency - I've explained that the overclock wouldn't make it any better.

Not talking about the overclock, but will it make a difference if I bought a RX 480 or not?

You asked about the CPU.

No, it would bottleneck like crazy.

My old gaming system works great still (i5 750 @ 4GHz, GTX 970, 8GB RAM, Win7 64bit, 2560x1600 30" monitor) with the games I play. Runs Doom, GW2, FC4 etc etc fine...

If the budget is that tight, I'd personally spend the money on a graphics card first, then a cpu/mb upgrade later, as the gpu will make the biggest difference...

That i5 is fine for the GPU's in question, just OC to 4ghz or higher, it's still very capable.

I have a intel xeon cpu and a 1070 i hope this makes you salty.

No question, upgrade your CPU. It's bottlenecking the hell out of your GPU.

If you don't mind waiting a couple months, a Ryzen R5 would be a good choice. Otherwise look at an i5-6400/6500/7400/7500. Those models go from least to greatest, but there isn't a huge performance difference.

An i5-6500 and an H170 motherboard would be my suggestion, assuming you go Intel.

Make sure to quote or tag me (@JoostinOnline) or I won't see your response!

OP, it is up to you, you will see significant gains from going to a RX 480 or GTX 1060, but overclock the i5 750 with it to handle that level of performance, the i5 is suitably matched with the 1060/ RX 480 when it is overclocked.

Otherwise invest in the latest with a cheap high IPC CPU, however it will not be anything significant to gain because the 960 is not a strong GPU.
