Microsoft is actively blocking W7/8/8.1 Updates on KabyLake and Ryzen systems (1/2)...

Source 1: https://linustechtips.com/main/topic/752965-microsoft-is-actively-blocking-w7881-windows-updates-on-kabylake-and-ryzen-systems/

Source 2: https://arstechnica.com/information-technology/2017/03/microsoft-is-getting-ready-to-block-windows-updates-for-old-windows-on-new-chips/

  • In an effort to get you to update to Windows 10, updates on legacy versions of windows (7/8/8.1) are not supporting new chips like:

    • Intel 7th generation or newer

    • AMD Bristol Ridge or newer including Ryzen

    • Qualcomm 8996 of newer

...Vulkan's multi-GPU muscle: now requires Windows 10 (2/2)

Source 2: http://hexus.net/tech/news/software/103633-vulkan-multi-gpu-support-will-require-windows-10/

  • Vulkan will only support multiple GPUs in Windows 10, dropping Windows 7/8.1 operating systems

  • Native multi-GPU support for NVIDIA GeForce SLI and AMD Radeon CrossFire setups now require WDDM to be set to "linked display adapter mode", something that is exclusive to Windows 10.

Chrome 57 will throttle background tabs to save energy

Source 1: https://linustechtips.com/main/topic/752602-chrome-57-will-throttle-background-tabs-to-save-energy/

Source 2: https://arstechnica.com/information-technology/2017/03/chrome-57-background-tab-suspension-download/

  • Background tabs will be limited to an average CPU load of just 1 percent on a single core.

  • After 10 seconds of being in the background (i.e. not in focus), each tab has a budget (in seconds) for how much CPU wall time it can use.

    • Wall time is the actual real-world time it takes for a process to start and complete.

  • The background tab is only allowed to use the CPU if it hasn't consumed its entire budget.

    • The budget constantly regenerates very slowly

  • Some background tabs are exempt from throttling, including tabs that are playing music and tabs that have a real-time connection to a remote server using WebRTC or WebSockets.

  • Google wants complete background tab suspension by 2020.

    • Later in 2017, on mobile platforms, background tab updates will be immediately suspended (right now they're allowed to keep running for five minutes).

    • Sometime in 2018, WebWorkers may be throttled as well

    • After that, all background tabs will be suspended immediately unless the site explicitly opts out.

    • by 2020, that opt-out will be removed, Chrome will be able to aggressively optimise and purge background tab memory usage

  • Google isn't trying to remove multitasking entirely. Rather, instead of running tons of JavaScript in the background, Google wants developers to move towards using Service Workers.

    • Service Workers allow for websites that provide a real offline experience, push notifications, periodic background sync,

  • To update to Chrome 57, visit Settings and then About.

Drone 'worth $200' shot down by Patriot missile worth $3m

Source 1: http://www.independent.co.uk/news/world/americas/small-drone-quadcopter-patriot-missile-shot-down-us-general-david-perkins-army-a7631466.html

Source 2: http://www.theverge.com/2017/3/16/14944256/patriot-missile-shot-down-consumer-drone-us-military

  • General David Perkins told a military symposium "a very close ally" used the surface-to-air missile to bring down an undisclosed adversary’s drone- ie not a test.

  • Patriots are radar-guided missiles designed to shoot down enemy missiles, travelling at five times the speed of sound to strike its target.

  • The general added: "That Quadcopter that cost $200 from Amazon.com did not stand a chance against the Patriot."

  • Commenting on the return on investment, he said: "If I'm the enemy, I'm thinking, 'hey, I'm going to get on eBay and buy as many of these $300 quadcopters as I can and expend all the Patriot missiles out there'."

  • Rather than using expensive military resources to deal with potentially rogue drones, implementing regulation and the standardisation of radio frequencies, on which drones operate, is vital to combat such threats.

  • "Despite the obvious benefits of drones, they must be embraced and feared in equal measures.”

Google to Revamp Ad Policies After Big Brands Boycott

Source 1: https://www.bloomberg.com/news/articles/2017-03-17/u-k-pulls-ads-from-youtube-citing-failures-in-policing-content

Source 2: https://arstechnica.com/business/2017/03/uk-government-suspends-youtube-ads-after-some-appear-on-extremist-videos/

  • UK government found out their PSAs ads were appearing before videos uploaded by “rape apologists, anti-Semites, and banned hate preachers.”

  • This means those creators were getting money from UK tax payes.

  • Others were affected too:

    • British supermarket chain J Sainsbury Plc. ads appeared on videos posted by the white nationalist Polish Defence League

    • The Guardian and L’Oreal ads appeared next to extremist and hate-filled videos,”

  • In response, Google announced changes in its ad policy to give clients more control over where their ads appear on YouTube and the Google Display Network would appear in the coming weeks.

New Solid State GLASS BATTERY

Source 1: http://www.digitaltrends.com/cool-tech/glass-battery-technology/

Source 2: http://appleinsider.com/articles/17/03/06/battery-tech-suitable-for-future-iphone-promises-3x-the-power-density-full-charge-in-minutes

  • Researchers have developed a low-cost all-solid-state battery that is safer and more efficient than existing lithium-ion technology.

  • The new battery uses a sodium- or lithium-coated glass electrolyte that has three times the storage capacity of a lithium ion battery.

  • It charges in minutes instead of hours

  • and operates in both frigid and hot weather (from -20 to 60 degrees centigrade).

  • Early tests suggest the battery is capable of at least 1,200 charge-discharge cycles without performance degradation

  • the glass-based electrolyte will not form the dendrites that plague lithium-ion battery technology.

    • The dendrites accumulate as part of the standard charging and recharging cycle and eventually cause a short circuit that often results in a smoldering or burning battery.

  • The researchers believe this battery technology could be the breakthrough that brings the electric car into the mainstream

  • The technology "simplifies battery cell fabrication" and is made from more earth-friendly materials, easing recycling and cutting back on the use of rare-earth minerals.

Source 1: https://arstechnica.com/information-technology/2017/03/google-jpeg-guetzli-encoder-file-size/

Source 2: https://github.com/google/guetzli

  • Google has developed and open-sourced a new JPEG algorithm that reduces file size by about 35 percent

  • Importantly, Google's new JPEGs are completely compatible with existing browsers, devices, photo editing apps, and the JPEG standard.

  • The new JPEG encoder is called Guetzli, which is Swiss German for cookie

  • Guetzli, uses a new model based on the human visual processing system to work out which colours and details to keep, and which to throw away.

  • the model "approximates colour perception and visual masking in a more thorough and detailed way" than other encoders.

  • Guetzli is freely available to download from Github. Web masters, graphic designers, and photographers are free to give it a go

Source 2:  http://www.startribune.com/search-warrant-issued-to-edina-police-raises-privacy-concerns-of-internet-users/416442113/

  • A scam-artist pulled a man’s image from Google and used it on a fake passport that was then used to trick a credit union into fraudulently transferring $28,500 out of the man's account.

  • The warrant demands Google to help police determine who searched for variations of the victim's name between December 1 of last year through January 7, 2017.

  • Googling the victim’s name brings up the photo used on the bogus passport.

  • The warrant commands Google to divulge "any/all user or subscriber information"— including e-mail addresses, payment information, MAC addresses, social security numbers, dates of birth, and IP addresses—of anybody who conducted a search for the victim's name.

  • Privacy law experts say that the warrant is based on an unusually broad definition of probable cause that would be troubling if it became widespread.

  • The image was not rendered on Yahoo or Bing

Slack bot learns your team’s questions and answers them so you don’t have to

  • Any user in a slack room can @ Niles a question.

  • If Niles knows the answer, it’ll post it.

  • If not, it’ll ask for help from the rest of the team.

  • If someone gives Niles an answer, it’ll remember it for next time.

  • Over time, Niles will learn to parse common questions without being directly asked.

  • If an answer to a question is no longer correct, the user can flag it — Niles will then ask whoever it thinks might know to provide up-to-date information.

  • Could be useful as LMG grows

Right, so R5... 3+3 and 2+2 on the modules, good for optimisations, bad for actual performance atm. Had to be 69% better though... But I'd rather see single threaded performance, to see if it has changed at all.

I'm glad that @Slick is hating the shit out of Windows 10. I don't like the direction they're going with it as if someone got Microsoft wrapped around their finger. But unlike Luke, I'm waiting for WWDC and hopefully Apple will fix the shortcomings of the 2016 MacBook Pro.

Am I the only one who trusts Google more on privacy than Microsoft. I think Microsoft has become the new big brother.

@Slick Those Chrome tab throttling things will make a difference to me, as my Yoga Book (my only laptop) runs an Atom x5 processor, which forces me to use Edge as it can barely run one Chrome tab. Granted, an Atom powered device is a bit niche but there is a use.

@nicklmg RE: Letterkenny. The humour is really rural Ontario. The premise is they're basically boonie kids living their lives and the creator of the show grew up in a small town so he casts and writes the roles really well in that regard. The show is extra funny for me though because I know and see people like that all the time. Feels like I'm going up to the cottage when I watch it. LOL

I hooked my friends on the show last summer. It'll probably be bigger than Corner Gas as a quirky Canadian comedy IMO.

Luke...do try Linux!

In many ways, Linux is the AMD of operating systems...the counterweight to Windows (Intel) which is needed.

(Trying to reference how you both were looking forward to regaining competition on CPUs)

The best 8 core i7 and Ryzen can both turbo to 4GHz.

The best 4 core i7 can turbo to 4.5 GHz, but the best 4 core Ryzen can only turbo to 3.7GHz. Seriously ?

It can compete with the 7700k just because it's cheaper, but it looks like wasted potential.

@Slick As somebody who is also considering the transition to Linux, if you can achieve it. Do you plan on making a video about it?

Apologies if you said you will or will not in the WAN show, I was rather tired when watching it last night so may have missed it.

Just signed up to +1 Luc's Linux experiment.  I'm coming from the Mac side, but share the same reasons.  Since Mac OS 10.6 on I've been changing 'default writes' and unloading agents and daemons to remove excessive integration I don't want.  It's never been worse than in macOS Sierra.

I want Linux for security and control, for everyday use, yet still run a major OS for games stripped of personal data.

Show us the light brother!

I understand the premise - what I don't get is the relatability. I guess we just don't get the same character archetypes out here in BC as often as you see 'em out in Ontario.

I'll take your word for it on the efficacy of the show, but based on the clips I've seen, as well as their YouTube content, it seems VERY one-note. Also, isn't it a CraveTV original?... As far as I can tell that platform is dead on arrival... I personally know literally zero people here in BC that subscribe to the platform. Maybe it's bigger out East, but in my personal experience it doesn't seem to be a significant player in the West.

Hard to imagine that ANY show could be as ubiquitous as Corner Gas nowadays... there are just too many options out there.

I can see it being hard to relate to if you don't have people that are like that over there in the west coast. It's a very niche situational comedy and I'm sure its not the easiest to decipher their jokes due to their vernacular (among other things). I would still agree with Luke that the Letterkenny Problems clips on Youtube aren't a complete representation of the show but they do have the cold open up for the first episode which gives you a decent idea of the general flow. I wouldn't say go out of your way to check out LK but if you ever get the chance to see an episode you should deffo do it.

As for the CraveTV thing I think they were initially a CraveTV exclusive but IIRC they're getting syndication on Comedy Central now (at least out east) so they're starting to branch out a bit. I personally don't know anybody that subbed to CraveTV either. I did for a few months just to watch LK but after I watched the first 6 episodes I cancelled. xD
