LiFePo is significantly safer, and can be charged from empty to full within a few minutes. Hurdles are packaging (I'm not aware of any flat cells), and capacity, which is significantly reduced from LiPo. Maximum discharge rates are also lower, though for mobile devices, this would be negligible.

But something I can't understand is. We've been using Lithium-ion batteries for years. But it seems like batteries all of a sudden are exploding left and right. So what has changed? The LiPo variant of batteries have always been especially vulnerable to thermal runaway. This is why safety circuitry is included to disable the battery before thermal runaway can occur. As with anything else man has ever made, 100% perfection, 100% of the time is hardly a guarantee. It just so happens that when something goes wrong, it is the extremely reactive piece of metal in your pocket (or on your ear). 

 

It is important to note that when energy density goes up, that the energy that can be released as heat also climbs. It could be that the percentage of failures is similar as in the past, but the effects are more severe.

This is what happens when idiots don't design things without any pre planning. For one ALL Lion and LiPo batteries should have cutoffs as this is one of the main reasons they explode. They are incredibly powerful and light while maintaining constant power output but when they go dead they are dead. Contious use leads to swelling and explosions. Secondly is pretty obvious. THE batteries expand in use and get warm. I mean how hard is it to do some R&D. I have know this for years due to RC vehicles. It shouldn't take Samsung and various companies to have people injured to realize how a battery works.

I believe that was only part of the problem for the first issue. The batteries themselves still suffered from manufacturing defects.

There were several issues.

1) In the upper right corner (please note that it was only in the upper right corner) there was not enough room so when the the battery expanded and contracted it put stress on insulating parts. When those parts broke, the battery got short circuited. It could also have been caused by the manufacturing process rather than expansion/contractions.

2) Some batteries did not have the proper amount of the aforementioned insulation. 

3) When the positive tab was attached to the positive electrode, some batteries got sharp protrusions around this area which sometimes touched the negative electrode (which caused a short circuit).

4) Some samples did not have proper insulation under the positive tab either.

 

 

When you see that there are multiple issues, spread out over multiple manufacturers, with millions of phones sold and yet "only" ~40 cases of exploding Note 7 were actually confirmed, that's still a really safe product which just happened to have seriously bad luck.
