Sony E-Mount favorites of LTT?

So I'm kinda curious what kind of glass the majority of LTT a6000/a6300 owners are rocking and would recommend or be their favorite lenses?


I'm sorta getting interested in photography again and I think I'd probably go mirror-less instead of DSLR just because mirrorless cameras are physically smaller (what a shocker /s)

 

and honestly the a6300 seems to be very good for what it is. I remember almost 2 years ago, I really wanted DSLR for the fact that it has a mirror and has an actual shutter.

 

Also does Sigma have it's art line for the Sony E mount yet or it still only on Nikon and Canon?

I only do Cannon at the moment. By far my favorite video lens is the 24mm-105mm.

This is a subjective question, different togs have different preferences for lenses and there's a whole lot of difference between budget shooter lenses and high end shooter lenses.  You'd likely wouldn't want to spend so much money on lenses I like using, not brand new anyways.

 

Sigma does make some Art, Contemporary and Sports lenses for the Sony E-Mount.  They call it the DN series.

You can buy their EF mount lenses and MC-11 adapter, compatibility is much better from what I hear than anything else out there. 

 

As far as what, it depends on what you want to do and how much you can spend. A very strong point of cscs is that you could adapt virtually all glass, giving you the ability to use older lenses, which are considerably cheaper and there are some genuine gems out there.

It all depends on your budget. Personally I can't afford the more expensive E mount glass. Like I would love the 85 1.4 G master but that is quite far out of my reach. There exists a few pretty good lenses though for a nice value. 

 

  • Samyang 12mm f/2.0
  • Sigma 30mm f/1.4
  • Sigma 60mm f/2.8
  • Sony 18-105 f/4

May have forgotten some, but really they quickly increase in price after these lenses. Say the new 85 1.8 will be around 600US (Probably more in EU). The only wide angle zoom for APS-C goes for like 800US. Any fast primes except for the Sigmas or the 50 1.8 or 35 1.8 is Zeiss or G master glass costing well above 1000US. 

 

Though, I still find the Sony mirrorless to be great, just be aware that lenses will be expensive. However they have put out a lot of new lenses during the last year. Wouldn't be surprised if Sigma starts making a few more too.

 

I'm personally debating on which Sony I'm going to replace my A5000 with. A6000, A6300 or A7. I find all theses three good and have tried out all except for the A6300 but that one basically is a better A6000 with slightly better build. (Going to go and compare the A6000 and A6300 I think before I buy anyone) 

 

As others have said you can also adapt a lot of lenses. Personally I have adapted a few old Nikkor lenses. Works pretty good with the Focus peaking. The lenses I've used creates a "vintage" look though as they are quite old (1980's). I have heard about a lot of people adapting the Canon FD 50 1.4 and being quite happy with that one.

 

You can also adapt "modern" lenses by using the Sigma MC-11 adapter and using the ART series lenses. Or buy the Metabones and use most Canon EF glass. Worth mentioning though is there is a lot of people claiming that smart adapters (that provide AF and things like that) works a lot better on the newer A6300 and A6500 compared to the A6000.

I have a few Sony E mount lenses and by far my two favorites are the 18-105 and the 10-18. If you want one lens and like to shoot a lot of different subjects I would get the 18-105. You can get the lens on sale for about $550 new. The 10-18 is amazing if you like to shoot wide. Both are great for video as well. If you want a fast lens i would go with tr sigma 30mm. It's faster then the Sony lenses and after crop it's a more usable view in my opinion. I have the Sony 50mm and after crop factor it's to much to really use indoors and hard to use for full body shots indoors. If your doing any wildlife stuff the 55-210 is tr best native option otherwise your best off getting the sigma 150-600 with mc-11. Its decent for birding and will give you the reach. So really depends on what you want to shoot, but I say you can't go wrong with the 18-105.

I positively adore my Zeiss Batis 85mm. Yes it's expensive, yes it's only an f1.8, but it's been through snowstorms, heavy rain, and never had a hitch on my a6300, something even the g-master couldn't do with it's lack of proper weather sealing. And the images off the batis in both photo and video are consistently some of my best. If you do portrait photography or do videography, I would first consider the cheaper 85mm 1.8 sony lens, but if you work in less than ideal weather, the batis is the way to go. My sigma 35mm f1.4 art is also a beauty of a lens, sharp as hell and can give excellent images. I've used the 16-70mm zeiss and I have to say that although it's wonderfully built and compact, it's not worth the extra cost over the 18-105mm f4. The 100mm f2.8l macro from canon gave me excellent results when I rented it for a shoot and I'd give the 20-35mm f2.8l a shot too on the mc11, the few pics I took on it were tack sharp, though I haven't had enough experience with the lens to confidently recommend it. Sony doesn't have much selection natively, but all of their lenses are consistently at the very least not crap, so just find the focal length you like and you'll probably not be disappointed.

Smart adapters need the PDAF of newer, higher end cameras (A7II, A7R II, A6300, A6500) to have decent AF. The a6000 is mediocre at best with the mc11 from my use; not suitable for enthusiast or professional use in my opinion. On the fs700 AF was not possible at all with the smart adapter.

I was looking at an a7ii before I upgrade to the 5d3 to replace my a6000 and 50d, my commlite worked worse or not at all depending on the lens than the a6000. Now that doesn't mean much because commlite sucks anyway, but I thought its worth mentioning.
