Best hdd manufacturer

Hi,

 

I was wondering if anyone knows the best hdd manufacturer with lower failure rate  and more reliable than wd. Recently  I opened a wd my passport ultra metal and as of today it shows that it's failing on crystal disk info and HD tune.  I've also have a wd my cloud which needs to send back for rma, I also have another failed wd my passport drive after 1 month of warranty over

Any expensive server grade hard drives. (I Would assume..)

Ryzen 5 3600 stock | 2x16GB C13 3200MHz (AFR) | GTX 760 (Sold the VII)| ASUS Prime X570-P | 6TB WD Gold (128MB Cache, 2017)

Samsung 850 EVO 240 GB 

138 is a good number.

WD....you probably want to look at non consumer drives if you think WD is bad. Seagate has gotten better but they have some terrible drives.

Just keeping this here as a WD Seems to have iffy manufacturing. i personally use a WD Blue in my main rig and a toshiba for unix installs. sometimes WD drives will outlive you and sometimes they will fail faster then your dreams of being a leet hacker.

You shouldn't measure reliability of all of the company hard drives based on a portable one because they are carried around often and have a higher tendency to be dropped shaken or generally mishandled, with that being said Seagate, and Western Digital are usually good options.

As with most things, you shouldn't go based off a brand. Most brands tend to have at least one bad product, but it doesn't in turn mean that all of their products are bad. 

WD Black drives are reliable and backed by a 5 year warranty. Seagate IronWolf Pro drives are also backed by a 5 year warranty.

There's very little reliable data on failure rates. You'll probably come across failure statistics from a company called BackBlaze. You should completely ignore their results as they're unreliable and invalid in so many different ways it takes too long to type out. 

 

As I said in my previous post, none of the manufacturers are better than the others definitively. You cannot compare reliability based on brand/manufacturer as they all have drives that vary. You could say Seagate is more reliable than WD, but that's way too broad a statement to make, as if you're comparing Seagate's cheapest drive to WD's enterprise grade drives, it doesn't hold true, but in different situations it will. 

 

In general, unless you can find specific reports of issues with a drive (some older Seagate 3TB drives had issues, for example), if it's from a reputable manufacturer (Hitachi, Toshiba, WD, HGST, Seagate etc.) it's most likely going to be decently reliable for its intended use. If you're worried, go for a drive that has a longer warranty (like WD Black or Seagate IronWolf Pro), as it's normally a good indication of how confident the manufacturer is in its reliability.

I'm in love with Hitachi Ultrastar server-pulls.  Probably won't buy anything else for mechanical drives.

I have a mix of WD and Seagate drives and one HGST drive in my system.

 

I had one WD green drive that developed bad sectors within the 3 year warranty and they replaced it with a brand new one.

I had one Seagate drive that developed bad sectors after about 3 and a half years (after warranty) and I still use it about 5-6 years from the time i bought it. The sectors are isolated to a small area of the drive and it doesn't worsen.

I had one Seagate drive that simply got too bad and couldn't use it anymore.

The HGST drive is one of the NAS 4 TB models and I've very impressed with it.

 

So my next purchases will be either HGST NAS class drive or whatever WD has with at least 3 years warranty, in the nas/enterprise range (except those surveillance/av drives, as the firmware sucks on them for regular use). I've kinda lost faith on Seagate.

 

Sucks that some distributors only offer 2 years warranty on drives in my country while others (or stores like Amazon UK) offer 3 years warranty on same models. I'm reluctant to order hard drives from Amazon UK as they'll ship them through regular mail and those guys just thrown packages around - the online stores i buy from often send packages through couriers.

 

Anyway, my experience may be a bit different than others because I keep my computer running 24/7, rebooting it only a few times a year for cleaning or due to power failures. So my hard drives have huge power on hours counts (for example the oldest in my system, a 1TB WD Black has 55540 hours of continuous operation, which equals to 2314 days or approximately 6 1/3 years .. the only Seagate I have with issues has 52k hours, so it's about 5 and a half years of continuous operation)

IMHO, turn off and turn on and fluctuations in temperatures in hard drives "weaken" them or cause more problems than just leaving them on 24/7... and if a hard drive survives the first 3-4 months of continuous on without any SMART warnings/errors, there's a high chance it will last for at least 3 years.

You can all check Google's hard drive study and see the failure rate percentages, just google it, the pdf is free to download.

WD service is in Singapore and many delivery service in Malaysia don't accept electronic which is not convenient. Also I'm looking  into better customers surport too
