AMD speaks on W10 scheduler and Ryzen

Its quite simple. Because each CCX has its own L3 cache.

So the cores in CCX[0] can't see the cache in CCX[1]. [0] being the first and [1] being the second CCX cluster.

Except for the fact that core 2 quads were using MCM whereas ryzen is a single die.

It is not impossible for microsoft to optimize for zen architecture. For example, keep all the processes spawned from one program on a single CCX.

I meant compared to Intel -- 40 vs 80.

yeah, the i7-6950X is ~1800$ and as Linux pointed out in a video, it was worth it for him

So you're telling me if you were starting a YouTube channel and edited videos for an hour a day that you would pay $1500 extra to get 30% better performance?!? That's Linus for goodness sake, that's what they do all day and they have the money to spend. Me? I'd much rather be able to buy 300 angus burgers from mcdonalds and be fat/insulated enough so that I wouldn't have to pay for clothing or heating. It keeps giving me money back, unlike the 6950x.

First of all, aren't you now counteracting your point about lmg using 6950xs so why shouldn't everyone?!?

Second of all, for the same reason people buy better GPUs and CPUs for gaming. People want better experiences. Maybe they enjoy editing video and don't want annoying stutters playback.

All the comments about "Buy the 7700K if you're gaming" and I'm here thinking...

If you're gaming, you buy the i5, not the i7, the i5 clocks 5GHz as well and the extra threads don't really have a benefit in most games. If you buy the i7, you need the extra threads. If you need the extra threads, Ryzen is better than the 7700K in every way.

So who is the 7700K for other than those with more money than sense?

Honestly, I would do the 7700 + B250 board over the 7600K + Z270 board.  Threads are nice to have when you need them.

Right, because I'm going to trust your math over PCPer's.  I might buy that if we're discussing single-threaded performance, considering the clock difference between Haswell and Kaby Lake, but Haswell's IPC, according to a reputable source, with my math shown, is only ~14 percent slower IPC-wise if we exclude 3/5 of the benchmarks.

no, you should not trust my math and do your own - the source of the data is in the OP, easily accessible

the point was I didn't do the IPC % calculations based on PCPer's data but the results from "Slit's" results over at Anand's forums and I arrived at the similar ~14% KabyLake IPC increase over Haswell

and that shows Anand's numbers are totally out of whack

who the fuck even buys Intel Extreme?! you are that rich .. go ahead

Me, and quite a lot of other people do. An i7 4930K wasn't that expensive at the time and was the only option for a decent all round CPU with more than 4 cores at the time. Now consumers have more choices and more than one vendor, AMD or Intel.

You have from Intel: 6800K, 6850K, 6900K and 6950X and from AMD: 1700, 1700X and 1800X.

If you happen to be able to make use of more than 4 cores your options just got expanded and cheaper, and there is simply no way a slightly faster 4 core Intel CPU will be able to keep up with 6 or 8 cores on a Ryzen in those workloads.

One very quick example of how I could make use of more than 4 cores is running virtual machines on my desktop. As part of my job almost everyone in my team runs VMs on their desktops during testing before moving them on to production VMware hosts, 4 core workstations utterly suck at that task. My work will absolutely go for the AMD option over the Intel option as it's a lower cost, significantly so, and for our task we purely need more cores. Performance of each core isn't even that important, it's the number we need.

If you need more real world examples I can give more. I've even got ones that are more applicable to home users than the above example, not that people at home don't host virtual machines either. Take a visit to the Servers and NAS section to see just how many people do from just this community alone.
