Reason behind shortage on AM4 Motherboards

Princess Luna

I have been going through a few articles and I found one addressing the current shortage on AM4 Motherboards, it has been quite common people here at the forum complaining how they already got their hands on a Ryzen chip but no words on their motherboard yet, the following article addresses this matter as can be seeing from this quote:

Quote

LegitReviews has a lengthy quote from an anonymous company that’s worth a read, basically arguing that AMD cut out the motherboard vendors until the last possible second, saying: “They have done nothing they should have been doing to support the launch platform partners and always delay or give no response on support requests.”

More can be seen on the following source:

That's a pretty short sighted reaction, even if it's true. You can't really expect to sell a ton of CPUs if you don't have the motherboard to slot it into.

Im currently waiting for itx motherboards. Guess it might be a longer wait than I thought.

I think Linus on the WAN show mentioned a new mITX one for AM4, I think a Gigabyte but I forgot.

Heard some speculation on Reddit that if AMD didn't put it off till the last minute, the motherboard vendors might go to Intel who would get more time to prepare for the launch, knowing what was coming.

@Lord Nicoll It was a Biostar X370-Racing, I think.

i heard that mobo manufactures were producing mobos for Chinese new year for intel, and that helped to reduce production of am4

It is rather strange to see high end hardware on sale so soon after launch. But stores aren't going to sell the processors without motherboards. The store I regularly buy from had the CPUs on sale before they even had motherboards listed in stock.

I really want to get a couple of Ryzen processors, but there are no Ryzen boards with all of the features that I need. With the increasing motherboard prices, unavailability and unsuitable features it makes more sense to just get another x99 system. A 6900K is only $1000 more.

I would not put it past Intel to have planned for it and given the manufacturers incentives to prioritise their boards for both reasons.

seems like a terrible decision. how exactly are we gonna use your CPUs if we don't have the mobos

there needs to be way more ITX boards, while we're at this

Easy.  Use them like this.  It's something of a time honored tradition actually.  Bet you can find several dozen folk here that have done it.  Hell, even I have.

Same here, that's the chip I'm waiting for. Though if, by then, games are still not performing that well on the AMD stuff I'll just go with Intel. I'm also worried that their ITX boards will be short on USB ports. Only one of the Ryzen mATX boards seems to have enough for me.

Biostar I assume, yea. I'd never buy one of their boards. I've got a decent chunk of time to wait though. I kind of get why we don't see many ITX boards yet, I imagine we'll see a flood of them when Ryzen 5 and 3 come out.

Whether the article and quote is true or not, we all clearly know Ryzen's launch was rushed.

Simply looking at the lack of motherboard supply, BIOS, and firmware,a nd RAM issues and it's blatantly clear it was rushed.

Should they have waited another month or two? Yes, if they wanted a significantly smoother launch.
Although by then the R5 and R3 lines would be ready as well; and that would take away sales from R7 where people now only really have 3 options; instead of 6-8.

So they do make a nice extra bit of money, despite this rocky launch.

I can attest to this personally my ASrock X370 Killer SLI/ac shipped a bit late and there has also been (excluding today) a bios update every day since launch. Yesterday was the only one so far that didnt have an update from the last time I checked.

No wonder leak were almost none compared to intel boards. Where, launch for Intel, each board maker has a varity of models to choose from. AMD on the other hand,  each of them only had a few. And some people thought, wow AMD must be good at keeping things from leaking out. There was nothing to leak out!

I'm gonna wait for more AM4 mATX mobos, that Biostar X370 mATX that was mentioned sounds like what I may be keen on. Gonna wait for big Vega, then I think I'll go full AMD on this build....perhaps a 1700/1700X + AM4 mATX mobo + Vega 10.....the reason why I'm fixated on mATX is due to my having a 'brand new' Caselab mATX case that I'd found in my storeroom, might as well use it.

Actually, it's vega 10. Vega 11 is a mid range chip meant to replace polaris, according to the most recent rumors.
