Defragging a NAS Synology ds215j

I'm running 2 x 3TB WD Reds in my NAS non raid so i have the full 6GB of space.

 

I have recently done some spring cleaning and sorted out and deleted 1.09TB of data.

 

What im wondering is it safe to defrag a NAS and if so whats the best tools to use?

You don't need to use any external or third party tool to defrag a Synalogy NAS.  Go into the Diskstation Admin and use the tools that the Synology Firmware provides.

Which model do you have?  All Synology NAS should come with Diskstation Manager.

Ive looked and can only find storage manager and cannot find anything to do with defrag.

Oh hey look I searched google for "synology defrag" and the first result was an official article from Synology about how to perform a disk defrag!

Great manage is greyed out for some reason and system us showing Normal.

which filesystem do you use?

according to storage manager file system is ext4.

most NAS boxes would have a maintenance program running in the background (e.g windows defender scanning your computer every so often) to keep the system at it's best

i have never used a Synology NAS box before (i have no use for one, everything i use for home and work rely on a linux or windows based server for anything server based) but i think they would have done this for the consumer as the consumer wouldn't go and defrag the drives often and forget to do it (i would, thats why i set it up to do it automatically on my servers at home and work)

Is it necessary to defragment the internal hard drive of the Synology Product?

No.

 

Disk defragmenter is mainly used for FAT file systems. Because the speed of reading files will decrease after the FAT system has run for a period of time, it is necessary to run disk defragmenter to rearrange data to speed up/accelerate the speed of reading files.

 

It is not necessary to defragment the internal hard drive of the Synology Product because the Synology Product uses EXT4 file system, and it has made the best arrangement while assigning files.

That's some premium marketing bullcrap right there...

EXT4 needs to be defragmented rarely. Ok. But I think the main issue here is that it's not easy to be defragmented in the first place.
