Automation is a very real thing and it is going to continually happen to jobs that take very little skill, and even a lot of skill; anything from monotonous office work to welding is being automated in large scale business, or will be soon if it hasn't been already. I'm only listing one job specifically here, since copying and pasting the whole article is dumb.

This means big $$$ to corporate figures who care solely about profits.

 

These machines could also be potentially better at doing a job that a human can do, in terms of speed and productivity. Quality is another matter entirely, but surely this could be fixed as well.

 

One job in particular that's up to the chopping block - everyone should have seen this coming with autonomous vehicles - are drivers.

This is a very real thing and it will happen. It's only a matter of time.

 

As a conservative, I believe in hard work and self-responsibility. You get what you earn, blah blah blah. With automation and a lot of these typical jobs going away that many people tend to overlook and not think about, the future is looking very different. Bill Gates and Elon Musk are talking about the government needing to prepare for a basic income of sorts. As much as it pains me to say this, I would have to agree with this idea as not every person is cut out to be a nerd that sits behind a computer all day writing and modifying software.

 

Maybe it'll work out, though. We'll adapt, probably.

Well if you teach a robot how to program, which we have, then there is no need for humans anymore. Robots that maintain the robots and robots that program others to be better, faster, more efficient. Humans will be obsolete. In the near future I see bus drivers, cab drivers, and other easy jobs a robot could do

I disagree. Code generation can only go so far. Even natural language interpretation of business requirements won't get the program 100% correct. Eventually? Sure, but I don't see programming going to the bots anytime soon. Especially not where legacy spaghetti code is concerned.

I'm a computer science major and I had the exact same thought. Why don't programmers create a AI that can program. Creating AI is very plausible and having it create another AI is even more magnificence. People are eliminating human errors at a very fast phase and in my opinion, it'll make us dumber as humanity age because if human make errors, human tend to be able to fix those errors but having a machine that already fix it for us and not letting us adapt to fix that error is crucial to us. Imagine having a machine cook beef medium rare, it's always perfect but if you don't do it yourself, you'll never learn nor know how to cook that beef. Did you guys know that if drivers are machine controlled, traffic would be none existence, because they talk to eachother where they are and how fast they're going and thus, traffic never stops and lights aren't needed at intersection.

It not just jobs that automation will eliminate soon we need to worry about, there are a lot of jobs where automation may not take over 100% but will take over enough to decimate professions. For example I work in an accounts department of 14 people, using technology available (if the company was inclined to spend the money) now I reckon they could cut maybe 5 of us? It wouldn't take too much AI to cut the department down to 2, and I can see that being the norm in about 10 years.

 

I addition to a universal income I think they may have to ration work too, you'd only be allowed to do maybe 2 days a week.

To the OP, a few countries are thinking about universal wages to prepare for the loss of employment due to automation. France has a candidate who strongly fight for it (for the wrong reasons, but still).

This is why my life is devoted to trade jobs - it'll be difficult in the next century for a robot to take over a job like electrical work, plumbing, or gunsmithing.  Carpentry is a possibility, though..

i can see homes getting debugging interfaces, yea sure the fixing still has to be done by hand but it would eliminate a lot of work.

I had this discussion in my econ class. Basically any job that can be automated will be taken over from robots. It's our generation that has to speak up on what is allowed or what is not. I put the fine line as being for jobs that are extremely hard for a human to do is possibly best for robots to do.

 

If no one wants to do the job then sure robots can take over the segment. (Like picking oranges from trees or really bad weather conditions and someone has to work.)

well low end electrician jobs can be automated. especially in factory's where the company has full control over the enviroment. debugging interfaces with AI prediction algorithm's can take quite some of those jobs, not to mention that as other jobs start becomming scarser more people will try to become electricians and other bot/AI maintainers which will flood the job market. just because this doesn't affect you directly doesn't mean that it won't be a problem to you.
