Snowden on WikiLeaks Year Zero: Evidence US govt pays to keep 'software unsafe'

Edward Snowden has tweeted his response to WikiLeaks’ massive dump of confidential documents surrounding CIA hacking tools, describing it as “genuinely a big deal.”

 

The former NSA employee is also convinced that the revelations exposed in this latest massive WikiLeaks dump are genuine, tweeting that only a cleared insider could know the names of programs and offices used by the agency. 

 

The whistleblower also claims that this is the first public evidence that the United States government is secretly paying to keep US software unsecured. 

 

 

I think this is a threat to everybody, and an abuse of personal rights to privacy and security.

 

I think another big deal about the new Wiki Leaks CIA docs is that they confirm that the CIA is posing as Russia while hacking, using Russian hacking tools and techniques, to leave an appearance of Russia-like fingerprints on their hack jobs - and that it throws any claim the compulsively-lying CIA makes concerning Russia hacking anything into disrepute.

There are countless things our government does that legally they are not allowed to. There was something similar on tv tonight, how the government can hack into everyday items, then have it seem like Russia is at fault.

the UK makes the US look like amateurs when it comes to illegal snooping, almost everything the NSA does originated from GCHQ, we have a dedicated spying complex(GCHQ bude) purely for scooping information from the undersea atlantic cables, we've got the largest ECHELON base which scoops up everything and then is freely shared with NSA, and agencies from canada, australia, and new zealand , and on top of that, the UK has the most surveillance cameras, and then there's the new snoopers charter which forces ISPs and cell carriers to store 12 months of information for every customer.

UK is very much part of Europe. Europe is a continent made up of different countries. You are talking about EU. Which the UK is also apart of, all though they are planning their exit.

Got to wonder how much of Windows 10's data collection is actually contractual for the CIA. Microsoft has proven that they will happily make money from any direction that they can, and that Windows owners are mere afterthoughts to them.

Like that will solve anything. Most tools were built in alliance with MI5 and almost 18 other large world powers. Makes me wonder if there is a larger reason I am missing.

I was about to say - mass surveillance is a pretty ancient problem all things considered. Each country does it in their own way, and for their own reasons, but it is all done to a similar extremity. First of all, If anyone honestly thinks the US government is the only one to spy on anyone you're wrong. And come on, it's not terrorists....

 

This isn't 1984, or anything else even remotely similar. The US Federal Government doesn't have a repository of everyone's sexual orientation, fetishes, FB Likes, and Netflix recommendations.

 

Does anyone seriously believe the US Government really has the power to do any of this? All security gaps are now US Government controlled? Yes, the US Government must behind everything, to include the garbage dolls that upload private conversations to the internet, totally unsecured.

 

Pretty much, mostly everything I've looked at doesn't substantiate this. Yes, of course if Apple, Microsoft, etc... were involved, they would deny deny deny... However, many of these security gaps were already well known, or maybe I'm the only one who knew... I'm not the smarted, so I doubt it.. SmartHome devices being totally hacked is not the US nor any other governments fault.

 

Why is this such a big deal? Consumers are the ones who purchase this stuff without a care in the world about security. Their lives are all over FB, Twitter, Instagram, and Blogs/Forums.  Anything that can be connected to the internet and hacked is going to be hacked. Should the US or any government try to hack them? Absolutely yes. Find vulnerabilities before the next guy so you know what the threats are against yourself.

 

Again, US, UK, CA governments don't give a crap if you touch yourself while watching Beetlejuice. It's not their goal. And the amount of conspiracy that goes into this type of stuff is ridiculous.

 

So anyone can hate what I said, that's totally fine. You know what you know.

 

And for the record, if I were Snowden, I would totally try to play into this. Why? So Russia doesn't get bored of him and he either goes on a vacation and is never heard from or seen again, or gets extradited to the US when he is no longer seen as "useful".

It's totally tech companies' fault that their stuff got hacked by the institutions that are supposed to be protecting the public...

 

Consumers buy this stuff trusting their government will put in place punishments to the ones that dare to violate their privacy, but get hacked by the same government. 

 

 

The real issue here is, there is a government agency that hack what it wants, whenever it wants, whoever it wants, without accountability, with no authorization from a judge, massively, undiscriminated (so much for innocence until proven guilty), and to citizens of their own and foreign!

vice had a really interesting interview with snowden where he mentioned some very interesting independent researches that basically concluded that mass spying had prevented zero terrorist attacks. didn't get to look further into it yet but here's the video if anyone's interested.
