Black & White Laser Printer Recommendation

Hey guys. I'm thinking of getting a black and white laser printer in the near future, as the prices I have to pay for ink for my current printer are outrageous. I've heard that toner is more economical in the long-run, so I'm hoping to save some money.

My budget is in the $100-200 range, so I'm not looking for anything fancy. Printing is really the only function I need, but scanning capabilities would be a welcomed addition. I'd also like the printer to have duplex printing capabilities (the thing that automatically prints double-sided). Since I don't spend my free time looking at printers, I don't know which brands are reputable and which ones I should avoid. If someone could inform me about the reputability of printing brands that are out there, I'd appreciate that. Thanks!

I actually couldn't underclock my 5 year old GPU to make it as slow as a next-gen console.

If you want something a bit cheaper price wise go with the 200 series. I have never gone wrong with HP.

Thanks for the suggestions. How do you find the HP software that comes with your printer? My inkjet printer is an HP, and I'm not a big fan of the drivers/software that comes with it. It installs a bunch of other junk on your computer that you don't need, and there's no option to skip those installations.

You can download the drivers from HP's website.

When you do the setup just skip the odd stuff. I know that HP's driver package is a bit bloated but it is designed to cover all their printer products in one package.

Select the proper printer and you should find something like this;

The one you are probably going to want (at least for the listed printer) is the first one. It wont be bloated and has just the print drivers and no extra software.

What's your opinion on Brother? Are they a good company for printers?

Personally I have a low opinion, the ink jets are quite wasteful of ink. As for the laser jets I have no experience with but I have heard mixed reviews.

If I had to say, HP is a bit more expensive but will last a good deal number of years with low maintenance. Brother is a cheaper alternative but requires more maintenance to achieve the same performance as HP.

Your usage will determine mileage of course but I would definitely suggest HP over Brother any day but Brother is a decent alternative.

Hope that helps.
