How do I do a status update without posting on somebody else's profile?  I've spent my whole time on LTT replying to forum posts, which is why I don't know how to do this.

Sorry for the mess!  My laptop just went ROG!

You either click "update status" in the menu that appears when you click your username, or you visit your profile and click "write a public message on your own feed" (that wording is really horrible actually).

Nevermind...figured out I had status updates turned off in my settings. xD
