What is the cheapest well known streaming box with UK On demand services and Netflix that also has an Ethernet port on the back.

An older computer from around the Core 2 Duo era should do fine for that. They're cheap as s$!t these days.

Intel Core i7-2600 (4C/8T), ASUS P8Z68-V/GEN3, 16GB GEIL Enhance Corsa DDR3 1600MHz, Zotac GeForce GTX 550 Ti 1GB, 240GB ADATA Ultimate SU650, Windows 10 Pro for Workstations

It has to be readily available for use in a school, so its not an option.

I would go with the Apple TV 4 as long as the UK broadcast channels have apps. It is easy to setup and easy to get people acquainted with.

 

You can even lock it down so that you cant add / delete anything on it so the teachers (more likely the kids) don't add anything bad.

^^^ Apple TV like he said, or the Xiaomi Mi box with a usb>ethernet adapter. If you don't want to deal with adapters the Apple TV, if you want the cheapest solution, the Mi Box.
