Using 2 different GPUs at the same time?

H0R53

This is different than another thread, I already read that and that's about an nVidia card and an AMD card at the same time.

I have a totally custom computer thrown together from a variety of OEM and OTS parts:

HP xW 4600 Workstation ATX Motherboard
Intel Core 2 Quad Q9400 @ 2.66GHz
8GB of DDR2 800MHz
nVidia GTX 460SE from an Alienware
700W EVGA 80+ Bronze
Sandisk 240GB SSD
3 other drives in JBOD

I have 3 screens but the 460 only has 2 possible simultaneous outputs. I don't have another 460.
I have a spare nVidia Quadro K3800. My motherboard is an Intel X38 chipset. It also has another PCIx16 slot, I tested with my 460 and it works. Can I use the Quadro to output to the third monitor without SLI? I will not be 'upgrading'. Do not instruct me to buy new parts, I already have a Dell Precision dual CPU build coming along, this is temporary. I just want to know if it's possible to use my 3rd screen.

Just try it, why the hell not. It should work in theory, even if the drivers aren't installed it's still capable of video output.

idk

yes it'll work. SLI actually only making it possible for the top card to output the video signal. With SLI off you can use them both for output. The quaddro will just show up as a new videocard and work the same as the 460. just connect a monitor and it will show an image. The OS will even extend the desktop for you immediately.

I have no signature

nVidia doesn't like having an AMD card in the same system, so it might not work.

Last I tried (about half a year ago), only one of the cards would work, almost always the one in the first PCI-E. The system would detect the nVidia card when in second PCI-E, but drivers refused to install and even when I got them to install, the nVidia card wouldn't work. Gave up at that point, since I just couldn't be bothered and just got an HDMI to VGA converter

Will work fine. Just no reason multiple cards for display wouldn't work. That is there primary purpose.

GeForce GTS 460, not Radeon RX 460 ;)

@OP, yes that will work, adding more cards for multiple monitors was commonly done back in the Fermi days due to the 2-monitor limit. Any combination of graphics cards can be used to add more monitors if you want.

GTX* 460SE 1GB, to be exact.

If I get a mini GPU like the GT 710 which is PCIx8 that should also work, right? I'm in the process of upgrading to a dual Xeon rig (Dell Precision 690) and I still want to be able to use all three screens.

Are there any PCIx8 cards that support SLI?
