Window-based NAS

Would it be recommended? Well, FreeNAS is "free" OS than Windows, but a Win10-based NAS is a good solution? Let's say I could just buy, plug, and assign a network drive letter each time I buy a new storage drive rather than buying it all first then do everything in one day.

Spoiler

It's not difficult to create Windows samba shares. Plus the Storage Spaces feature in Windows 10 and Windows Server 2016 appears to be good to work with.

You could use Win 7/8/10, all will serve as basic file shares no problem. It just makes more sense to use something like FreeNAS or if you want to pay use unRAID.
