What is your use-case? Is it going to just be a general file serving NAS? Do you need to run VMs on it? Are you doing /r/homelab type stuff?

FreeNAS is what I'd recommend. It's simple enough to use for basic sharing but also allows you to get under the hood and set up more complex features and apply more specific settings.

FreeNAS refuses to install on it I get this. The OS needs to be supported. this is the list http://h20564.www2.hpe.com/hpsc/swd/public/readIndex?sp4ts.oid=3884083&swLangOid=8&swEnvOid=4117

It looks like a lot of OS's don't play nicely with the G6 Proliant's, but they work fine with the G5's... Personally, I'd recommend rolling your own NAS by running Debian and custom installing something like OwnCloud or Plex. Or see if you can get XPEnology running on it, which is a clone of Synology Disk Station.

To fix your error I would first check that you have the latest BIOS / Firmware on it LINK.

If you can rule out the hardware having issued you may look for another OS.

I'm running a NAS OS called "openmediavault" on my Xeon and another AMD FX based system. It is based on Debian, which is supposedly being supportet by Hewlett Packard for this type of machine. If it doesn't work either, you want to try stock Debian or any other big Linux OS and set it up yourself. There are guides on the internet to help you out but if you are new to Linux in general I'd stick with a NAS OS or if all else fails, put windows on it (not a good choice for something that shouild be a reliabale system). In some cases you may have to take a closer look at the hardware of your sever. You could have issues with a number of things like a harddrive controller or controller card that may have issues with driver support. Because those mainboards are usually designed by the manufacturer themselves, components on them might be rarely found in the desktop world an thus lacking support from the community.

I went and checked and if you really just want to use OS versions officially supported, in case of OpenMediaVault you would use version 0.5 or older that use Debian 6.
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/OpenMediaVault

I dont understand what you mean with "Server didn't like it", Im curious if you actually got errors or you are just following the compatibility list from HP, because 90% of the times hardware vendors wont update those lists even if their machines do work with more recent versions of OSs, most of the times to force you to upgrade to a new one if you want "official" support.

Regardless, that is the only thing I know similiar to FreeNAS, other than that you could go full manual, likst install ZFS on a Linux distro of your choise.

This error doesnt seem to be directly related to the OS you are trying to install.
I might be due to bad boot device or your Bios is not actually booting from your installer and instead trying to go for your HDDs that have no proper partitions.

Here is 1 article about it:

https://alpacapowered.wordpress.com/2014/06/23/illegal-opcode-red-screen-of-death-while-booting-a-hp-proliant-server-from-an-usb-sd-card/

And another one that was in contact with HP support where he did this:

"1. 2nd mainboard change -> reboot with 'Red Screen'
2. turn off and on the server
3. clear RAID
4. reboot
5. BIOS settings on default/ clear NVRAM
6. turn off and on the server
7. build new RAID -> no 'Red Screen'"

Hope it helps.

I just throw the latest ubuntu server ISO at my boxes.

Install NFS and samba and start throwing files at it.

Really depends if you want a user friendly interface to it, with lots of flashy features, or just use it as network attached storage in the traditional sense.

it's got to run PLEX and server as a NAS
