Overclocking questions

OK - So I am overclocking my CPU for the first time and it's not showing up in windows, but on boot bios says my clock speed should be 4200 mhz. (set to 100mhz x 42)

in windows: https://gyazo.com/214acb723a96882d47489aff88db7048

Is this normal? Which one is the actual clockspeed?

Thanks.

That is normal.

You would need another program to look at the clock speed. You can use task manager in the performance tab to get a rough idea though it's not always accurate.

What's a good tool to stress test?

Windows properties shows only base clock/frequence of the processor. It doesn't measure anything at all.

AIDA 64 but it costs. There's a 30 day free trial

Any free ones? I don't want to get used to a paid program because then I'd be tempted to pirate it after the trial expires.

How long should i let the stress test run before I go and boost the multiplier some more? It's been about 10-15 min of all 4 cores at 100%

Windows does not show proper CPU frequencies, you need to use proper software like HWmonitor, CPU-Z, etc etc etc.

Whenever you feel like you can bump it up.

Usually if it is going to crash it will do so in about 5-10 minutes most of the time.

Keep turning up the frequency until you get crashing, turn the frequency down until it stops, or turn up the voltage.

Sometimes a system won't crash under full load but will crash under moderate load. My 2500K system will crash at 4.5 between 25% and 75% load but is fine above or below that.

Last question -

What's a good temp at 100%? Is 70 degrees C a good temp to leave at max?

80*C would be the maximum recommended. Anything above that and you should be worried.

70*C is fine, not the greatest but perfectly acceptable.

4.8? The hell kind of voltage are you pushing through it?

Try using CPUID and HWMonitor to check for CPUVcore.

Pull your voltage WAY back, you are torturing your CPU.

Don't go over 1.4V CPU core in CPUID, 1.45V if you don't care about longevity.

In your BIOS manually set your CPU voltage to 1.4V, if it is set to automatic the BIOS is giving the CPU the voltage that it is asking for to maintain its frequency.
