Seasonic Prime Titanium Worth it?

Xreldo
Go to solution Solved by Enderman,

I decided to look for other PSUs that are not EVGA and when I clicked titanium and I noticed the Seasonic Prime Titanium 750w which is quite cheap at £115 which I think is a good deal for a titanium PSU compared to EVGA.

and I heard that seasonic is a good company that make PSUs so is it any good compared to EVGA g2s?

SeaSonic makes good PSUs. 750w seems a bit too much. What are system specs?

Thanks. I would appreciate a titanium power supply as I spend quite a bit of time on my PC and a titanium PSU would save some money.

I'd go for a 650w. How much does that cost?

seasonic prime is probably the caviar of the power supply market, they are a bit on edge for 80+ titanium branding (they just *barely* make the spec) but quality wise there's very little to be said wrong.

as described by jonnyguru:

http://www.jonnyguru.com/modules.php?name=NDReviews&op=Story&reid=481

in fact, it is one of the few units he has ever given a 10/10.

Good PSU, but if you're spending more money to see a cost savings I really don't think you're going to see it.

luke used one of them in his build, they look amazing pretty much everywhere.

point of warning tho, dont put them in a top mounted power supply case, they are about as heavy as a solid block of lead, my server has one of them and is top heavy as hell now :P

honestly, it ends up in more than you think for some regions, i shaved a healthy 3 bucks a month off my power bill by going titanium for my server. depends on where on the efficiency curve you are, and what type of use case you present offcourse.

FWIW, i'm having some issues with a SeaSonic PSU, SS-660 XP Platinum. Drops power to the MB randomly under little to no load (under 100w). have an RMA issued, but i'm still doing some testing and validation before I send it in.

it is a really nice unit though. damn well built just by eyeballing the parts.

not the best picture probably, but i guess you can imagine the problem this case layout brings with a power supply thats heavier than all other parts combined :P

Keep in mind the PSU is most efficient at 50% load.

The Titanium is 4% more efficient than Gold. So it'll use ~30w more.

Depending on your usage, it might be smarter to go with a Gold PSU if it's significantly cheaper.
For example, the difference between the two saves me (~$0.10 kWh) $6 a year. In the UK it'd be about 7 pound @ 12p/kWh.

True, but unless he lives in Hawaii it's not that much. The server situation makes sense since I imagine you keep it running 24/7?

eh.. have you seen the power bills in europe?

and my server runs 24/7, but is physically incapable of drawing more than 100 watts or so from the wall, if i max out every component it has. which... it runs idle mostly :P

EDIT: as a metric, if belgium goes up another 20-ish % or so in power bill cost, we're on par with hawaii.
