I use the GC-Electronics stuff because it costs a couple bucks for an enormous tube of it, and it outperforms tons of "enthusiast" pastes.

Also the temperatures separating the best and worst are ver ysmall if you get a high clamping load on the heatsink.

I bought a bulk thermal compound 40G, comes with a mini plastic spatula, to spread thermal paste on CPU! Not as good as I thought it would be, compare to using a squeeze tube like them toothpaste or the syringe. Too much thermal paste goes to waste.

You should spread it on bread and see if it tastes like peanut butter.

Is the act of pulling a stupid face for every thumbnail worth it?

Sometimes i see the thumbnails now and cringe a little, does it really boost views?

Linus, you simply bought a crap thermal grease.

Rather than going to stores like Amazon, you should have checked out stores that sell electric components ... for example Digikey.com , Mouser.com , Farnell.com / Newark.com (same company, different websites for different territories).

I personally bought a reasonably good thermal paste tube (much better than those gray grease tiny one use  baggies but let's say not as good as Arctic Cooling MX-4 or similar) , 57 grams for less than 8.5$  - now it's around 9$ at the store I used : http://www.newark.com/aavid-thermalloy/250g/thermal-grease-tube-57g/dp/68Y6618

From the same store, you can buy a bit more basic thermal grease (but cheaper) at around 26$ for 8 oz (about 226 grams) : http://www.newark.com/wakefield-solutions/120-8/thermal-joint-compound-jar-8oz/dp/00Z1247

Heck, you could even buy a 20lb can (about 9.07 kg) for around 360$ (so around 40$ for 1 Kg) :

http://www.newark.com/wakefield-solutions/120-320/thermal-grease-can-20lb/dp/00Z754

If you want some brand names known in the IT, you can buy Arctic Cooling MX-2 (decent thermal paste) for about 40$ for 65g ... expensive but much cheaper compared to buying 16 x 4g syringes of the same product.

I can't see a use for bulk compound unless you work for Google or Amazon, though.

Yeah, I feel ya. I mean I kind of get it. If you look at the forum, a huge percentage of it is quite young. They are probably drawn to such things. I noticed the videos taking much more of a "look at our office and all the stuff we buy!" or "here's a build no one will really do" turn. A couple times is cool, but not constantly. At least Jayztwocents does obtainable, more useful reviews.

Each to their own I suppose though.

Damn Linus. You got ripped off big time.

Exact same thing only it's CDN$ 20.29. $13.99 on the US site.

He paid 90$ for 1000 grams of thermal compound, what you linked is for only 100 grams...

Hey Linus,

If you're interested in giving it another whirl...

Innovation Cooling, LLC  IE: IC Diamond publishes  thermal conductivity of 4.5 W/m-K.

This stuff: http://www.digikey.ca/product-detail/en/t-global-technology/S606C-30/1168-1382-ND/3042211 is 5.0 W/m-K.

And this stuff: http://www.digikey.ca/product-detail/en/t-global-technology/TG-NSP-60-1LB/1168-2116-ND/5280212 is 6.0 W/m-K.

We've used both at our lab in Victoria with good results. Also next day shipping with Digikey ;)
