Switching to a New Motherboard

justicerevenge

I plan on upgrading my rig by switching out my mother board and processor in the future. As far as OS, would i have to reinstall it to my current boot drive again or can I just plug in my ssd to my new mobo and not worry about anything?

Your OS key is tied to your motherboard's BIOS.

You would have to reactivate the OS, however you probably won't have to reinstall it.

New Build (The Compromise): CPU - i7 9700K @ 5.1Ghz Mobo - ASRock Z390 Taichi | RAM - 16GB G.SKILL TridentZ RGB 3200CL14 @ 3466 14-14-14-30 1T | GPU - ASUS Strix GTX 1080 TI | Cooler - Corsair h100i Pro | SSDs - 500 GB 960 EVO + 500 GB 850 EVO + 1TB MX300 | Case - Coolermaster H500 | PSUEVGA 850 P2 | Monitor - LG 32GK850G-B 144hz 1440p | OSWindows 10 Pro.

Peripherals - Corsair K70 Lux RGB | Corsair Scimitar RGB | Audio-technica ATH M50X + Antlion Modmic 5 |

CPU/GPU history: Athlon 6000+/HD4850 > i7 2600k/GTX 580, R9 390, R9 Fury > i7 7700K/R9 Fury, 1080TI > Ryzen 1700/1080TI > i7 9700K/1080TI.

If you already used the key for that copy, you'll have to call Microsoft's support hotline and get them to reactivate it. Mileage may vary of course.

If it's a fresh, never used key, then you're good to go.

No, i used this key on my current mobo. I bought it just a few months ago and I will probably make my switch near the end of this year. Thanks for the info.

You can re-activate your license in 'Settings' as long as you are on the Windows 10 Anniversary update or newer.

Use these instructions: http://www.windowscentral.com/how-re-activate-windows-10-after-hardware-change

i7 7700k @ 5.0GHz | GTX 1070 Founders | Vengeance LPX 16GB | Asus STRIX Z270F

-  Logitech G930 7.1 | Corsair K70 Lux RGB | Mad Catz RAT5 | Acer 4K 24" K242HQK | Sony 31" HD  -

This would be done on the bew mobo right?

Yes once you have installed the new components you would then follow the re-activation instructions; just make sure you have linked your Microsoft account with your copy of Windows before you install the new components [This can be done using the instructions on the link I posted earlier.]
