Shots Fired!: Google’s Waymo sues Uber

Source 1: https://www.bloomberg.com/news/articles/2017-02-24/ambitious-engineer-at-center-of-colossal-fight-between-google-and-uber

Source 2: https://arstechnica.com/tech-policy/2017/02/waymo-googles-self-driving-car-division-sues-uber-over-patent-infringement/

  • Waymo filed a lawsuit accusing ex-engineer of taking valuable IP from Alphabet to Uber

  • His web searches, downloads, and access to an external drive left digital footprints

  • He installed "specialized software" on his corporate laptop, loading it with 14,000 confidential files about LIDAR technology

  • While at Google, he secretly plotted his next startup, Otto

  • Left Google in Jan, receiving multi-million dollar severance...

  • ...Then sold Otto to Uber in August for $680 million.

  • The next month Uber unveiled plans to bring self-driving cars to Pittsburgh

  • dude “took extraordinary efforts to raid Waymo’s design server and then conceal his activities," the suit reads.

Disney nails ‘free-roaming’ wireless power delivery

Source 1: https://linustechtips.com/main/topic/741318-disney-finally-nails-free-roaming-wireless-power-delivery/#comment-9397645

Source 2: http://mashable.com/2017/02/21/disney-solves-real-wireless-charging/

  • Disney Research has achieved room-scale ubiquitous wireless power delivery

  • you can walk into the room with a smartphone in your pocket and it will start charging

  • Researchers built a freestanding living room with aluminum panels covering the walls, floor and ceiling.

  • In the center of the room a two-inch copper pipe runs vertically from floor to ceiling

  • Electric current runs down through the pipe, into the floor, and up the walls, looping at 1.3 million times per second.

  • That looping electricity creates a room-filling magnetic field that runs in a circular pattern perpendicular to the pole.

  • no humans can stand within 46 centimetres of the copper pole because your body will absorb dangerous amounts of energy :|

  • the researchers say it’s safe to transmit 1.9 kilowatts of electricity: enough to power up to 320 USB-powered devices

Bluetooth audio ‘impossible’ with Nintendo Switch

Source 1: https://thenextweb.com/gaming/2017/02/24/bluetooth-audio-impossible-nintendo-switch/#.tnw_BEvezgbU

Source 2: http://www.siliconera.com/2017/02/24/confirmed-switch-will-not-support-bluetooth-headsets/

  • Nintendo won’t say why Bluetooth won’t work.

  • Headphone jack is on console, not controller

  • Many games command players to look at each other instead of at the screen, making audio necessary

  • This negates many of the advantages of portability and use in public areas (airports)

Switch Will Not Have Virtual Console At Launch

Source 1: http://kotaku.com/nintendo-switch-will-not-have-virtual-console-at-launch-1792668183

Source 2: http://ca.ign.com/articles/2017/02/23/nintendo-switch-no-virtual-console-at-launch

  • Nintendo: "Virtual Console games will not be available on Nintendo Switch at launch. We will share more information in the future."

  • Virtual Console is Nintendo's emulation service, allowing Switch to play games from NES up to GameCube

  • It will likely become a major part of the console's new paid-for online subscription, which will offer NES and SNES games each month.

  • The delay in Virtual Console support likely means we'll also be waiting longer for Nintendo's plans on whether discounts will be offered on games previously bought for other platforms.

Microsoft is testing underwater Data Centers

Source 1: http://spectrum.ieee.org/computing/hardware/want-an-energyefficient-data-center-build-it-underwater

Source 2: https://linustechtips.com/main/topic/538446-microsoft-is-testing-underwater-data-centers/

  • Idea came from employee who had previously served on Navy submarine

  • Underwater centers would:

    • Limit the cost of cooling the machines

    • Lower construction costs

      • building codes, taxes, climate, workforce, electricity supply, and network connectivity would be more uniform underwater

    • make it easier to power these facilities with renewable energy

    • improve their performance as they can be closer to population centers

      • Most new data centers are built in locations where electricity is inexpensive, the climate is reasonably cool, the land is cheap, and the facility doesn’t impose on the people living nearby.

      • That means far away.

  • A 105-day experiment showed that the submerged computers could be kept at temperatures that were at least as cold as mechanical cooling but with just 3% of the energy overhead of free-air cooling

AMD's Ryzen platform has issues with high-frequency DDR4 memory

Source 2: https://forums.overclockers.co.uk/threads/ryzen-ddr4-memory-what-you-need-to-know.18770248/page-3#post-30533843

  • Ryzen is having issues with 4 sticks of RAM, while running with high speeds of RAM sticks

  • It is recommended to only run RAM sticks at max speed of 2400mhz if running with 4x sticks of RAM

  • However it is possible however to run with 2x sticks of RAM with a max speed of 3200mhz

  • All according to one forum post?

  • per-user download speed of 100Mbps and upload speed of 50Mbps- all the time

  • Should offer users a maximum latency of just 4ms, down from about 20ms on LTE cells

  • PLUS 1ms latency for ultra-reliable low latency communications (URLLC).

  • must support at least 1 million connected devices per square kilometre to prepare for IoT future

  • radio interfaces that are energy efficient when under load, but also drop into a low energy mode quickly when not in use

  • manufactured on Samsung's new 10nm process, which purportedly allows for performance increases of 27% while using 40% less power compared to its 14nm process.

  • The CPU uses four "big" cores and four "little" ones

  • Small cores are based on ARM's Cortex A53 CPU architecture

  • The large cores are based on Samsung's "second-generation custom CPU core," called the Samsung M2. it's a 64-bit ARMv8 core "designed from scratch."

  • it supports up to 28MP rear and front cameras

  • It can record 4K video at up to 120 FPS and supports H.265/HEVC and VP6 recording and playback.

It's definitely clickbait based on what was in the show.

however, the 1080Ti is most likely happening. it's like 95% confirmed.

GeForce.com has TI bolded in the word TIME on their countdown timer... So it's coming alright.

For gaming, it's obsolete, but for content creation i think the Titan has some extra benefits that the 1080Ti won't have.

note how the 980Ti was better than the titan X due to AIB boards, but people still bought the Titan X Maxwell

It doesn't really matter if the sales on the Titan XP go downhill now, they've already sold boatloads of them and it's been "king of the castle" for months now, I'm sure they have lots of chips that aren't good enough to be Titan XP's, and can now be used to make 1080 TI's.

You also have to remember, 980 TI was only better because of the coolers and better board designs, watercooled 980 ti vs watercooled Maxwell Titan X, the Titan X pulled ahead.

I wouldn't really call it obsolete, there's always people that have entirely too much money that want the "absolute best" and will continue to buy crazy $10,000 PC's with titan XP SLI and 2342134 m.2 drives with full custom loops.

So, Ryzen doesn't have Quick Sync.

But Nvidia and AMD dedicated GPUs have equivalent technologies.

Since Ryzen doesn't have an integrated GPU, you'll use a dedicated GPU anyway, which has hardware video encoding.
