2FA telling me wrong information

AlTech
Go to solution Solved by colonel_mortis,

The edge issue should be fixed in the next update (I reported it a couple of months ago), but the IP issue can't be fixed, because it relies on information provided by your internet service provider to the IP location database that we use. It very specifically says "near" because, depending on the ISP, it can be very inaccurate sometimes (10km isn't bad really).

So I was casually browsing my emails and I noticed that the LTT Forums 2FA was showing me weird information.

I will confess, my heart started to beat faster until I verified that the 2FA was incorrect.

Basically, the 2FA email feature told me somebody logged In with my account in a place far away from where I actually am.

I was able to verify the IP address is from my PC (I won't post it here for reasons) but it thought I signed in using Chrome 51 (not true. Was using Edge 38) and thought I was over 10Km from where I actually am.

IDK if I should be concerned or not. I'm quite certain that this is a bug and I would like not to get scared in the future. I thought somebody hacked my account for a second.

After the cloudflare incident, one can never be too careful.

Any calculation of location based on IP address will always be "approximate" - soft of.  Usually depends on what information your ISP is setting in some database somewhere.  Often the location is the office of the ISP - the best ones will put you at your local exchange / distribution point and no closer.

Getting the browser wrong is a little more disappointing - and unexpected for Edge vs. Chrome.

The thing is, I just changed my password today (within the last hour or two) .

And I also signed into 2FA using the code from a previous email.

I see, that is quite odd, maybe setup the two step authentication, it is a hassle sometimes but it does increase security, I have seen my location of logging get wrong on Google email before however never the browser get listed incorrectly, then again I don't use Edge neither Chrome as my browser of choice is Firefox, it could be some issue with the server that didn't recognize the Edge version and generated a random entry?

I really hope you get alright [:
