4K, IPS Gaming Monitors?

Hi all,

I'm really wanting to upgrade my multi-monitor solution to a single 4K (3840x2160) display... But I want to get the right thing.

I've currently got three Dell U2312HMs in portrait running Nvidia Surround - I used to use them with Eyefinity before I upgraded. I love these monitors and can't cope without the larger screen area.
These give an equivalent screen size of 42" at a resolution of 3240x1920.

Switching to one 4K monitor will remove the bezels and increase the screen-space I have - and more importantly, the usability. An important thing for me is that I don't want to use scaling; I want native 4K.

I'm not really sure what size screen I want, but the options that I have seen that should be suitable are: 32", 40" and 43".

32" would be on the limit for using without scaling - but I think I would be happy with that. What do you guys think about usability without scaling on 4K @32".
40 and 43" would probably be a good size, perhaps too big as I'm thinking I might want to downsize slightly (though space is not an issue).

The only really important factors for me are the panel type and the extra utilities of the monitor.
I need IPS. I've used it for over 5 years now and I cannot stand any monitor that isn't IPS. I've had two laptops with horrible screens (including my current one) and used many monitors elsewhere that just don't look good.
I need USB ports because I've got so many external devices. They don't have to be USB3 but I imagine most are. Ideally, I'd like a 4-port hub but the more the better.
Ideally I'd like 120Hz, but I'm pretty sure the technology and interfaces aren't around to handle that yet. For those thinking that I won't run games at that frequency anyway, I mostly play lightweight games and with the demanding games I'll just put up with the lower framerate.

Now I don't want to just go out and spend £1200 on the PA329Q just because it looks like it's good - but if it genuinely is the best, I would definitely think about spending that.

Gsync.... Not something I've ever used but everyone spouts that it's really, really good. Should I definitely get a monitor with it or should I not factor it in too much?

Which 4K, IPS monitor should I get for general, multimedia and gaming use?
Are there any monitors that I should avoid, bearing in mind that I want to use this for a considerable amount of time.
What would you guys strongly recommend?

It might be out of your budget and isn't out yet but the new Asus 4K monitor is coming out soon. It literally has every feature.

I need IPS. I've used it for over 5 years now and I cannot stand any monitor that isn't IPS. I've had two laptops with horrible screens (including my current one) and used many monitors elsewhere that just don't look good.
I need USB ports because I've got so many external devices. They don't have to be USB3 but I imagine most are. Ideally, I'd like a 4-port hub but the more the better.
Ideally I'd like 120Hz, but I'm pretty sure the technology and interfaces aren't around to handle that yet. For those thinking that I won't run games at that frequency anyway, I mostly play lightweight games and with the demanding games I'll just put up with the lower framerate.

Gsync.... Not something I've ever used but everyone spouts that it's really, really good. Should I definitely get a monitor with it or should I not factor it in too much?



TL;DR and final notes:
Which 4K, IPS monitor should I get for general, multimedia and gaming use?
Are there any monitors that I should avoid, bearing in mind that I want to use this for a considerable amount of time.
What would you guys strongly recommend?

I think even 32" might be a bit small for 4K without scaling. That would be equivalent to 2880×1800 on a 24". I use 2560×1440 on a 25" without scaling and I don't think much smaller would be workable.

Hmm... I have a 1080P laptop with a 15.6" screen and I'm really happy with the resolution of that. It equates to 141PPI and 4K at 32" is "only" 137PPI.
The only thing is that the distances could alter how that feels.

Yeah, laptops are not a good comparison since you typically use them a lot closer than a monitor.

Typically, though I usually throw mine on a desk and have a keyboard and mouse in front of it. We'll see. I could cope with 125% scaling if I had to, but I'd hope I don't have to use it as it would negate the extra screenspace from the increased resolution.

If they make it in 32" or bigger, then it sounds good.

Edit: Having actually watched the whole video, that PA32U at the end sounds better - but I'm doubting it'll have G-sync and/or 144Hz being the "professional" version. I can only hope though!

Edit 2: Have been scanning websites for info and I've seen it mentioned that it's only 60Hz and doesn't support G-sync either - but can't see anything official anywhere on either of those specs. Anyone know how I can contact Asus and force them to make the PG27UQ in 32" or bigger format???

Sent a message to Asus about this and they responded.

They said that a monitor featuring ALL of the specifications I require is not an item in knowingly in development.
So I guess the 27" monitor is the closest I'm going to get unless someone else figures out that 4K works best on bigger screens.

Yeah, it's like they can't figure out how to make bigger pixels anymore... ~130ppi is what we want with 4k so 32" screens or it is just a waste of pixels for non resolution nerds.

I'm glad I'm not the only one. There are several 32" 4k monitors but none that suit the "all-round heavy user". Ie, someone who wants the best gaming experience as well as the best general use experience.

I will admit that hi-res fonts with scaling turned on do look much better than they do at native resolution, but I'd rather have the screenspace.
