3-way SLI doesn't really work with the newewst GPUs however, it is not supported and very buggy, might even decrease performance.

not sure about 3-way crossfire

2 was always my max due to the law of diminishing returns.  Especially now since as stated above the latest gen of Nvidia cards don't even support more than 2 cards w/o getting help from Nvidia to get it to work.

you simply shouldnt have three cards... wanna make a badass rig cause you got a lot of money to burn make a Titan XP sli.

You get small performance gains per card you add. At most a 50% increase in some games, some games even perform worse with multiple cards. Your best bet is to get the best single card you can afford, Then, if you need even more powerful then the best single card, you go to two. IF you need more then that for raw compute or something, then you should look into building a server or workstation. 

In all honesty, I don't know of that many games that you need more then 2 Titan X(P)s to run at ultra settings at 4k...

But in all seriousness, probably someone who thought they could eke out even more performance in games, even though for the most part with recent AAA titles, you're pretty much going to hit the CPU wall before you hit a GPU wall by adding more cards.

Diminishing returns on performance with more than 2 cards make it a very poor choice for getting more power out of your graphics for the money needed, plus Nvidia doesn't really support more than 2-way SLI anymore.

Depends on what you use the cards for. Vague question, specific answers for some reason.
