Maximum monitor refresh rate stuck at 85hz from possible 165 (via DisplayPort 1.2)

Ryuk

Hello guys,

So I lost my original DisplayPort cable that came with my Asus PG279Q. I bought one online, which is a DisplayPort 1.2 - in theory capable to do 2560x1440 @144hz (maybe not 165hz, but 165hz brings a tad of input lag so I am fine @144hz.

Now the maximum resolution is 2560x1440 @85hz. Works only with 60 and 85hz. If I go higher, say 100, 120 or 144hz, the screen goes black for a few seconds and then reverts back to 85hz. I double checked, the cable is definitely DisplayPort 1.2.

What can I do now?

Build:
GPU: ASUS GTX 1080 Strix
Monitor: ASUS PG279Q
Motherboard: ASUS z170i Pro Gaming
CPU: i7 6700k
Ram: Corsair 32gb
Storage: Samsung 256gb NVMe, Samsung 1TB SSD

3m DisplayPort 1.2

Have you double checked the monitor's settings? Maybe you tweaked something you forgot about. Other than that, might be a faulty cable, I would try another one to make sure. As a side note, how on earth is 165hz giving you input lag? The higher the fps, the less the latency, not the other way around. Or maybe you mean tearing, idk.

Edit: Are you sure your monitor came with 1.2? Can't find anything specific now but I think DP 1.2 might not have enough bandwidth for such a resolution at that high refresh rate.

1.2 is enough. The Monitors display port is 1.2

@Ryuk I think your new DP cable might not be rated for high enough bandwidth. a DP 1.2 cable is not just 1.2 The standard allows for optional main link in the cables. These will increase the rated bandwith of the cable. Yours is said to do 4k at 6 so I would think it should be enough. But I've simply stopped bying DP cables where I can't find the rated bandwith..

The Lindy Cromo Range of DP cables is rated to just under 18 Gbps which is max for DP 1.2 iirc

Interesting, I am actually not sure, but I believe that it is a quality DP 1.2 cable (in the box). It is gone now though so I need a replacement, if only I knew that something will work in the end ..

That is what is bothering me. Contacted the store I bought it from, they said they had no problems in the past, they've sold thousands.

The problem is I cannot find any DP cables really anywhere and I don't know anyone who has a DP cable.

I would pay a little more for a well known brand just to make sure. It might be a waste, but at least a guaranteed purchase.

(edit: Well the one you got certaintly doesn't look cheap though...)

But all in all, you could have simply got a defective cable. You could try asking for a replacement.

The problem is that I am in Bulgaria now and there are no reputable brands around lol. If only I could retrieve my old cable ...

lindy's cromo range. If not available locally you should be able to find them on amazon.de

So you think it is 100% the cable? I just tried reinstalling the drivers with DDU and nothing.

EDIT: Tried running low resolutions, still cannot go beyond 85hz. Tried lowest possible resolutions as well, simply cannot go high refresh rate.
EDIT2: Doesn't that mean that the bandwidth is not the problem? It should have worked with the lowest possible resolution or am I wrong?

Almost certain. Almost the same issues I had. And I've seen the refresh rate change in the settings depending on which HDMI cables we used on 4K Monitors at work.

I am still having my doubts, I won't be able to find a better cable in Bulgaria so that's probably why :D

The store keeps telling me it is a 1.2 cable and should work just fine, claim there is something wrong with my setup, do not want to accept a return, fun.

Visit the shop and tell them to prove you that it works. They can't simply "claim" there's nothing wrong without checking it first.

It is Eastern Europe, you should know how returns work in these countries. It has been 2 weeks since I am stuck with an office chair, will only be able to send it back tomorrow, nightmare .. I miss the states sometimes.

Well, I live in Eastern Europe myself, and if I learned anything is I have to make things happen myself :) Pressure them enough and they will take care of it, it's your right as a customer.
